Landmarks in London

Last summer holiday I went to the United Kingdom with my students and some of the other teachers.We visited many famous p laces in London.Such as Big Ben,London Eye,Tower Bridge,Buckingham Palace and so on.Do you want to know more about them?Come with me?

1.Big Ben

Big Ben is the short form for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Houses of Parliament.Big Ben is usually referred to both the clock and the clock tower as well.It is one of the most famous landmarks in London.It was built in 1859.It is over 96 meters high.The clock has four faces.You can view it from different angles.The m inute hand is over 4 meters long.

Although the origin of the name Big Ben is not known,there is a popular story.It was named after Sir Benjam in Hall,a large man who was in charge of the Great Bell.Hearing the Big Bell chiMing when walking along River Thames must be very enjoyable.But you cannot often hear the chiMing now because the clock is being repaired from August,2017.It will take 4 years to repair the big clock.

2.Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is over 300 years old.The palace is located in central London.There are 775 rooms in this palace.Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II lives and works in the palace.It is open to the public from mid-August until the end of September.

The Changing of the Guard is a famous sight.And it’s especially popular among visitors to the UK.The changing takes place at 11:30 am daily from May until the end of July.The changing lasts 40 m inutes.You can take fantastic photos with the cool guards and the horses.

3.Tower Bridge

Across the Tower of London,you can see a beautiful bridge standing over River Thames.It has two big towers.From a distance,the tops of the towers just look like two big crowns.That is Tower Bridge,one of the finest and most famous bridges in the world.It was built in 1886.And it opened to the public in 1894.It has become a symbol of London.Seeing the red tour buses passing the Tower Bridge is really the typical impression of London.From the Tower Bridge,you can see both old buildings and modern buildings standing beside the river bank.That’s a fantastic view of London.The middle part of the bridge can be lifted up when huge ships pass through.You can also visit the inside of the tower,where you can observe the original engines used to raise the bridge.

【教学设计文本】

一、教学背景分析

1.教材分析

Longman Welcome to English 6B Unit 2的主题是“Exp loring London”,在本单元中出现了许多伦敦著名的景点,并主要训练了问路和指路的语言。本篇阅读材料是在本单元的话题基础之上,结合课外拓展阅读和网络资源整合的一篇阅读材料,主要介绍了伦敦具有代表性的地标。阅读内容丰富,符合学生认知水平,满足学生探究欲望。

2.学情分析

(1)满足学生需求

武汉外国语学校的学生每周有六节英语课,其课时量在普通小学三节课的基础上高出一倍。作为外国语学校的学生应该具有“国际视野,世界情怀”,因此我特意选择了国际化大都市英国伦敦的相关信息作为教学材料,开阔学生视野,增加文化积淀。

(2)提升英语素养

语言能力、思维品质、学习策略和文化品格是构成英语学科素养的四大要素。阅读什么样的材料可以提升学生的语言、思维、文化和学习策略则是教师重点要思考和研究的专题。六年级学生的阅读策略和跨文化交际意识培养是关键。本节课主要通过略读全文,理解大意;查读文段,获取信息,分享阅读成果;多维互动等多种方式来培养学生的阅读策略和技能。学生在完成阅读活动的同时接触了大量语言信息和文化信息,并在完成阅读单的活动中激活了思维,学习策略得到了总结。

二、教学过程与方法

1.Pre-reading activities

(1)Free talk.

(2)Brain storm:What will you think of when we talk about the UK?

Possible answers:Big Ben,London Eye,crown,Queen Elisabeth II,River Thames,the telephone box,the guards...

(3)Pupils watch a short video about the teacher’s study tour in the UK and find out some landmarks in London.

设计意图:互动交谈,教师介绍自己所在城市的地标,并让学生介绍深圳的地标,帮助学生建立landmark的概念。头脑风暴,引导学生说出对英国的印象,激活学生背景知识。观看教师的游学活动视频,拉近师生的距离,建立学生和话题的联结,激发学生的阅读兴趣和欲望。

2.While-reading Activities

(1)Get ready to read.Think about one question:How to be an active reader?

Four trips to be an active reader:

①Looking at the title,headings and photos.Use them to think about what you already know about the topic.

②Circle any new words.And try to guess the meaning in the context.

③write any questions you have about the text.

④Make word webs,outlines or charts to help you understand ideas visually.

(2)Task 1:Let pupils skim the text and find out:

What landmarks can you find?And where are they?(Big Ben:It is at the north end of the Houses of Parliament.Tower Bridge:It is over River Thames.Buckingham Palace:It is located in the central London.)

设计意图:在学生初次接触文本时,渗透Skimming阅读策略,培养学生快速阅读的技巧,快速阅读全文,厘清文章脉络,明确文章的话题和大意。快速解决伦敦地标有哪些、在哪里的问题。

(3)Task 2:Ask kids to choose a landmark they like best and finish the worksheet about it.

Instructions:Read the statements and write“T”or“F”before you read and after you read.

Instructions:Read the following sentences and match them with the pictures.

(4)Task 3:Information exchange

Step 1.A fter individual reading,the pupils chose the same landmark can stay together,they can check their worksheet in their groups.

Step 2.The groups take turns to come to the front to give a report of their reading,the other groups can follow the sharing group to finish the worksheet at the same time.

设计意图:提供给学生丰富的阅读信息,犹如一顿自助大餐,学生可以选择自己最感兴趣的地标去精读,并完成对应的阅读单,阅读单中有对每个文段的阅读策略的培训。限时自主阅读,不仅让学生有自主选择阅读内容的机会,还可以突出不同层次学生的阅读差异,为后续的信息共享做好铺垫。在信息共享环节,阅读同一篇文段的学生首先在一起讨论阅读成果,然后依次上台做阅读成果分享。其他没读到该文段的学生可以跟随分享小组的步伐快速完成阅读并补全阅读单。阅读信息分享环节为学生分享交流阅读成果提供机会,形成信息互补,这样一来,学生在单位时间内所获取的信息可以最大化。这也是异质阅读的魅力所在。

3.Post-reading Activities

(1)Group work:Read the text again and choose a landmark to introduce.

(2)Introduce some websites to pupils.Pupils can visit them after class to get more information about London.

设计意图:学生在完成“介绍某一个地标”的实践活动中,进一步内化阅读成果,学以致用。将课内阅读延伸到课外,扩大阅读空间,介绍一些优质网站给学生。在互联网+时代,能择优获取在线网络平台信息也是一种终生学习的能力。

4.Assignment

Visit some websites the teacher recommends.Read on line and getmore information about London.
