Colony, poor and mad.
This is Vietnam ruled and colonized by England, a region where everything is remote unimaginably and covered by darkness.
A white girl with long reddish brown hair wears a shabby fur cap of man, her high heels inlaid with gold belts having a soft color gilded by reflected light sunlight. Far away is Siam Mountain covered by fog, as gloomy as the limit between death and eternity. With the torrent of Mekong River flowing through her fair feet, she remembered her insane mother, brutal older brother, weak second-older brother and the old castle which is mistakenly said to belong to Louis Fourteenth. The man on the river bank drives a black car, the cigarette between his fingers flickering. They are lovers and cant stop loving.
This novel with somewhat autobiographic flavor comes from Marguerite Duras, a famous French novelist and playwright, who is good at scene switch and rendering. She played this technique in his movie incisively and vividly, for instance, the depiction of a trembling and helpless Chinese man in a new car of Limoux, dark streets in Vinh Long, a little lonely felt-hatted girl near flashing and mud river......She narrated a deep and hopeless story in another story with dark tones, the most helpless and hopeless love between a poor French girl and a rich Chinese boy. Under that specific social background, their encounter bore a destined tragic color at the very beginning so that the novel is teeming with some kind of strong emotion which goes into the deepest part of human heart directly and straightly.
The works was wrote in the time implication of introspection. At the beginning of the book, the author wrote:” what can I tell you? At the time I was just 15 years and a half old”. That is in a ferry of Mekong River and that image continued all the time when crossing the river.
I was just 15 years and a half old……
This kind of narration via longitudinal paradigmatic relations makes the novel full of strong sense of frame so that every detail seems changed, but doesnt change actually and finally it forms a kind of inner-heart movie——which contains projections of multiple desires.
