so that意为“因此；所以”时，常用来引导一个表示结果的状语从句，此时不能与in order that换用；从句中谓语根据需要使用相应的时态，主从句间可有逗号相隔。如：

Wang Lin did not work hard enough, so that she is out of work when she is still young.王林工作不够努力，因此年轻时就失业了。

展示三：辨别两种不同状语从句

so that既可以引导目的状语从句，也可以引导结果状语从句，如何区别呢？我们可以从以下两点进行辨别：

（1）根据句子结构辨别

从句谓语中含有情态动词may/ might, can/ could, should, would等，这时so that引导的是一个目的状语从句；从句前面有逗号和主句相隔时，so that引导的是一个结果状语从句。试对比以下两个例句：

He didn’t plan his time well, so that he didn’t finish his work in time.他没有把时间计划好，结果没有按时完成这项工作。

Yesterday morning Miss Li got up early so that she could catch the first bus.昨天早上李小姐为了赶上早班车起床很早。

（2）根据主从句逻辑关系辨别

so that引导目的状语从句，一般表示尚未完成的目的或意图，主句和从句之间是结果与目的的关系；而so that引导的结果状语从句则是表示主句所导致的结果，主句和从句之间是原因与结果的关系。试比较：

I gave my new telephone number to Li Lei so that he may call me when necessary.我把新的电话号码告诉给李雷，以便必要时他可以给我打个电话。

I told Li Lei my new telephone number so that all of them called me when necessary.我把新的电话号码告诉了李雷，因此，必要时他们都给我打了电话。

展示四：so...that...与so that的区别

so that和so...that看上去很相似，它们之间有什么区别呢？

“so...that...”句型的意思是“如此/这么……以至于……”，常引导结果状语从句。

1. so... that句型中的so是副词，常常用来修饰形容词或副词，常用句型为：主语+谓语+so+形容词/副词+that从句。如：

He was so angry that he couldn’t say a word.（so后接的是形容词）

The boy ran so fast that I couldn’t catch him.（so后接的是副词）

2. so that ...（以便/为了……），引导目的状语从句和结果状语从句。如：

He spoke at the top of his voice so that the students at the back could hear him.他说话声音很高，为的是后面的同学能听见。（目的状语从句）

He spoke at the top of his voice, so that the students at the back heard him.他说话声音很高，结果后面的同学都听见了。（结果状语从句）
