With the students getting older,they read in different ways.About 50% of primary school students depend on their parents to get books,the number of whom drops to slightly over 20%for junior high school students,and 10% for senior high school students.Half of them buy books by themselves.About one fifth students of all ages borrow books to read.Online reading also plays a more important role for bigger students.

Personally,I think bigger students have more freedom to choose books,and they have more access to the internet.But since they are still adolescents,proper guidance and supervision should be provided so that they can gain more benefit rather than harm.

We Should Expand Our Reading Range

As is shown in the pie chart,the percentage of reference books in students’ extracurricular reading accounts for 83%,which is the highest among the four categories while famous books,newspapers as well as magazines only make up 6% and 8% respectively.

In my mind,two reasons are responsible for the phenomenon.First,the grades of English exams play a critical role in students’ study,thus causing students to spend more time on reference books.Second,due to the lack of vocabulary,many students find it difficult to read English masterpieces and articles in the newspapers or magazines.

My suggestion is that we students are expected to try to expand our reading range from different reading materials.Besides,teachers should offer proper guidance in students’extracurricular reading.

Last week,a survey concerning English extra-curricular reading time was conducted.The results are as follows.

It is worrying that 33% of the students don’t do any extra reading weekly and 40% only read for below three hours.In addition,respectively 19% and 8% involve themselves in three to five hours and more than 5 hours of reading.After some analysis,it occurred to me that lacking interest and teacher’s guidance may be the main reasons.Moreover,too much homework is also likely to contribute to the result.

Based on the reasons,it is highly suggested that we should attach more significance to reading and try to shorten the time spent on homework in order to ensure our reading time.After all,it is reading that actually improves our English.
