On November 17-18, the 2018 Academic Annual Meeting of China Society of Cryospheric Science was held successfully in Foshan City, Guangdong Province. In the context of global warming, the cryosphere is undergoing significant changes and has major impacts on global and regional ecosystems and socio-economic sustainability. In order to further promote the development process of China's cryosphere science, strengthen the exchanges between scientific research personnel in different sectors and fields, further condense the scientific research team of the cryosphere science, explore the new development directions of the cryosphere science, and promote the cryosphere science giving better service for sustainable development of social economy, the Chinese Cryosphere Science Society organized this academic annual meeting, this is the third annual meeting since its establishment. The theme of the conference was "Cryosphere and Sustainable Development in the Context of Global Change". Nearly 300 academicians, experts and scholars from the fields of climate change science, cryosphere science and resources and environmental sciences gathered at Foshan to discuss the major strategic needs, frontier hotspots and key scientific issues in the field of cryosphere changes, impacts and sustainable development. The conference was hosted by China Society of Cryospheric Science, and co-organized by the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Science and State Key Laboratory Permafrost Engineering of Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER),Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The invited experts who attended the opening ceremony on November 17 included Academician Qin DaHe from NIEER, Academician Liu ChangMing from the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Academician Chen DaKe from the Second Institute of Oceanography, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Academician Zhang RenHe from Fudan University, Academician Lai YuanMing from the NIEER, Researcher Ouyang ZhiYun, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Ecology, Researcher Zhai PanMao, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group I, Professor Zhang TingJun from Lanzhou University, Zhang GuoYou, Vice Chairman of China Geography Society, Professor Liu WeiDong and Du DeBin from China Geography Society, Researcher Ding YongJian, Luo Yong and Ma Wei, Vice Chairman of China Society of Cryospheric Science, Researcher Qin WeiJia, Director of the Polar Expedition Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Yu QiHao from the NIEER, and so on. The opening ceremony was hosted by Academician Qin DaHe,Chairman of the China Society of Cryospheric Science. Academician Liu ChangMing, Lai YuanMing and Researcher Zhang GuoYou and Ouyang Zhiyun delivered speeches on behalf of the Brotherhood Society and the supporting unit, respectively. The experts evaluated highly the outstanding contributions made by the China Society of Cryospheric Science in advancing the rapid cryosphere science development, promoting the talent training in the cryosphere science, disseminating the scientific research results of the cryosphere science, and solving major national strategic needs. Subsequently, the award ceremony of the 2018 Outstanding Scientists and Young Scientists Award of "Shi YaFeng Cryosphere and Environment Fund" was held.

Opening ceremony

After the opening ceremony, the keynote report of the conference proceeded. Academicians Ding YiHui, Chen DaKe and Qin DaHe made reports on "Ice Snow and Frozen Rain Disasters in China's Winter and Arctic Climate Warming", "Dynamics of Polar Ocean Science Research", and"IPCC 30 Years Review", respectively. Academician Qin DaHe pointed out that the IPCC has issued a series of evaluation reports in the 30 years since its establishment, which not only promoted the response of the United Nations to the climate change process, but also provided an important reference for countries to cope with climate change. At the same time, China actively participates in activities such as the preparation of the IPCC assessment report and the reform of the operational mechanism. The participation has become more and more extensive and has made important contributions to the sustainable development of mankind. Academician Lai YuanMing and Prof. Yu QiHao made research reports on "Frozen expansion mechanism and prevention technology of high-speed railway subgrade in seasonal frozen soil area" and "Main problems and countermeasures analysis of major engineering construction in permafrost regions in China". The mechanism of freezing and thawing in the soil area and its impact on major projects and engineering countermeasures are involved. After that, Researchers Liu WeiDong, Ouyang ZhiYun,Ding YongJian, Zhai PanMao, Luo Yong and Zhang TingJun made "Research Progress of 'One Belt and One Road'", "Ecosystem Service Assessment and Protection Policy Innovation","Research Progress of Cryosphere Change and Impact", "1.5-degree Special Report of IPCC Global Temperature", "The possible link between the three-pole climate change — the coupling mechanism between the sea and the land," and "The current status and challenges of the Arctic cryosphere research", respectively.

Meeting venue

On November 18, around the theme of the conference, the participating experts held a discussion and in-depth academic exchange on the four major issues of "process, mechanism and records of the cryosphere change", "interaction between the cryosphere and other spheres","cryosphere engineering , disasters and sustainable development" and "Cryosphere remote sensing and big data". Participants reported in detail the frontiers, difficulties and hot issues of the current cryospheric research and its research progress. The meeting came to a successful conclusion at the afternoon.
