英语中“代替”的表达法有很多，现将其种种表达法归纳并举例如下，供同学们在复习时参考。

1. instead of意为“代替”“而不是”。如：

He will go instead of you.

He stayed at home instead of going to the station.

2. instead意为“代替”“反而”“而”，是副词，放于句首或句末。如：

She never studies， instead， she plays tennis all day.

Your teacher is ill today； Ill give you lessons， instead.

3. stead意为“代替”，是名词。如：

If you cant come， send her in your stead.

4. in （the） stead of意为“代替”（=instead of）。如：

Who will go to Beijing to attend the meeting in the stead of Mr. Zhang？

5. in place of意為“代替”，相当于instead of。如：

Roft had to work as blacksmith in place of his lazy father. 罗夫特只得代替他懒惰的父亲去当铁匠。

We use gas in place of coal in cooking.

6. in ones place意为“代替”（=in place of）。如：

Our monitor is away， Im acting in his place. 班长不在，我代替他的职务。

Ill go to Wuhan in his place.

7. take the place of意为“代替”，作谓语，用在名词、代词前。如：

Tractors have taken the place of horses in many places. 在许多地方，拖拉机代替了马。

Who will take the place of Mr. Smith？

8. take ones place意为“代替、接替”（=take the place of）。如：

Tom will take the chairmans place. 汤姆将代理主席。

Your maths teacher is ill， so Ill take his place to give you a maths lesson.

9. for意为“替、代替”，多用于口语，作为介词放在名词、代词前。如：

Please post this letter for me.

Let me do it for you.

10. stand for意为“代替、代表”，作谓语。如：

He stands for his boss to attend the meeting.

VIP stands for Very Important Person. VIP表示“非常重要的人”。

11. replace意为“代替，取代”，作谓语。如：

Can anything replace a mothers love and care？

Do you think there will be a day when computers replace the human brain？

12. replacement意为“代替，取代”，是名词。如：

Can you get a replacement while you are away？ 你不在时能找到人代替你吗？

13. substitute意为“代替”，作谓语。如：

You can substitute margarine for butter. 你可以用人造奶油来代替奶油。

14. substitute for意为“代替”，此时，substitute是不及物动词，与for搭配。如：

He substituted for the typist during her absence. 打字员不在时由他代替。

15. in lieu of意为“代替”，相当于instead of。如：
