Abstract:The article analyzes the paradigm, concepts and logics of the power transition theory, and points out that the core viewpoint of this theory is,after the dissatisfied great powers shorten their power gap with the dominant state through industrialization, economic and social changes, their calculations of the cost-benefit of wars to change the order will also differ, and they are very likely to challenge the existing international order by launching wars. The power transition process has two aspects:the challenger’s national power becoming stronger and the relative power between the challenger and the dominant state becoming smaller. This theory has relatively strong explanatory power when there is no nuclear deterrence and the international order is zero-sum.But this theory is also facing some difficulties, such as how to evaluate national power, the timing of the wars, and the influence of nuclear balance on power parity.Meanwhile, the theory’s logics have two shortcomings. One is taking it for granted that the strongest state is definitely the dominant state in the international order. Two,those states capable to challenge the dominant state are naturally dissatisfied with the existing international order while the nature of international orders might differ greatly.
