鲁迅一直主张“竭力将可有可无的字、句、段删去,毫不可惜”,然而,我们发现在《呐喊》和《彷徨》里,这位语言大师使用了大量的重复手法。重复在其中扮演了其他辞格所不能替代的重要角色。当然,这些重复手法的文体意义并非完全一致,而且其表现形式也并不单一。鉴于其在翻译中的体现,本文将仅考虑那些并非作为语篇衔接手段的具有文体意义的重复,包括表现中心思想的关键词语的重复以及在文中具有特殊意义的句子的重复。
小说《孤独者》的第一部分,作者着重描写在人们眼里的魏连殳的异样。“异样”作为主题词共出现四次:(1)但他们却更不明白他,仿佛将他当作一个外国人看待,说是“同我们都异样的”。However, they understood him ever less, looking on him as if he were a foreigner. “He’s not like us!” they said.(2)但因为他没有家小,家中究竟非常寂寞,这大概也就是大家所谓异样之一端罢。Since he had neither wife nor children,however, his family was very quiet, and this presumably was one of the things considered freakish about him.(3)这又很出于他们的意外,大家的心的重担都放下了,但又似乎反加重,觉得太“异样”,倒很有些可虑似的。This was totally unexpected.A weight had been lifted from their minds, yet their hearts felt heavier than ever, for this was so “freakish” as to give rise to anxiety.(4)……所以从村人看来,他确是一个异类;…hence in the villagers’ eyes he was an undoubted freak.
从以上四句原文以及其相对应的译文可以看出,“异样”这个主题词其中两次都被处理成了“freakish”。鉴于异样一词在本部分中的重复具有作为主题词的意义,笔者认为将其仍然译为“freakish”较为恰当。试将该句改译为“He’s freakish to us!”
在小说的第二部分中,作者五次描写了魏连殳的“冷”以突出其桀骜不驯、蔑视世俗的个性,包括“素性这么冷”,(customary reserve )“冷冷的微笑”,(cold smile )“却再不像平时那样的冷冷的了”,(customary coldness) “冷冷的态度”(looked cold again)以及“词气的冷峭”(the cynicism of his remark”)等。译者将其中三次处理为“cold”,另外两次分别换用了“reserve”以及“cynicism”。虽然这样的处理较好地体现了文章用词的“variety”,符合英文的习惯,但是笔者认为在此处首先应该考虑的是对主题词的体现,因此,这两处分别换成“customary coldness”以及“the coldness of his remark”似乎更好。
句子的重复在小说集《呐喊》与《彷徨》中出现频率最高。例如:(1)一代不如一代!Each generation is worse than the last! (《风波》8次)(2)我突然想到她的死,然而立刻自责,忏悔了。The thought of her death occurred to me abruptly, but at once I reproached myself and felt remorse.(《伤逝》2次)(3)自己的,他们谁也没有干涉我的权利!I’m my own mistress.None of them has any right to interfere with me.(《伤逝》2次)
以上所举均为小说集中句子重复的实例,从其相应译文可以看出,译者已经注意到了这样的重复,基本上原文的重复形式在译文中都得到了保留。当然这些重复都较为明显,只要译者翻译态度认真,不随意对原文进行改动,一般不易忽略这样较大规模,较多次数的重复。
以下讨论几例易于忽视的重复:赵家遭抢之后,未庄人大抵很快意而且恐慌,阿Q也很快意而且恐慌。After the Zhao family was robbed most of the people in Weizhuang felt pleased yet fearful,and Ah Q was no exception.(《阿Q正传》2次)
这句话的翻译里面,译者为了避免造成英语中的累赘乏味而将后半部分的重复进行了处理。为了看看这样的处理究竟对文体意义的传达有没有影响,不妨将译文回译:“赵家遭抢之后,未庄人大抵很快意而且恐慌,阿Q也不例外。”原文对阿Q与未庄人作出了区分,意思是阿Q跟未庄人一样的“很快意而且恐慌”。因此这里译文的处理是不恰当的,试改译为:After the Zhao family was robbed most of the people in Weizhuang felt pleased yet fearful,and Ah Q also felt pleased and fearful.
下一例选自《阿Q正传》的“优胜纪略”以及“续优胜纪略”部分。(1)才心满意足的得胜的走了。…would the idlers walk away, satisfied at having won.(2)心满意足的得胜的走了。Thereupon he too would walk away, satisfied at having won.(3)到十秒钟,阿Q也心满意足的得胜的走了……In less than ten seconds, however, Ah Q would walk away also satisfied that he had won, thinking that…(4)胜的躺下了。He lay down satisfied that he had gained the victory.
众所周知,阿Q的思想核心是“精神胜利法”,“精神胜利法”是他在现实生活中忍受一切不堪忍受的压迫的思想支柱。“精神胜利法”在小说中也是作者着重刻画的内容。以上所列出的四句都是作者的叙述部分,是对人们使用精神胜利法后状态的描述。这种状态是相同的。前两例译者进行了同样处理,即“satisfied at having won”,第三例稍微作了些改动,但第四例却换了一种说法,即“satisfied that he had gained the victory”。为了保持这种叙述的一致性,同时保留原文对这种描写的加强作用,本文作者认为将后两例也改为“satisfied at having won”为佳。
