Harbin EngineeringUniversity (HEU)originatedin 1953fromtheNaval Engineering Department of the PLA Military Academy of Engineering,which was the first senior military university of technology established in China.HEU is now included in the key universities that were first listed in the national“211 Project”.

HEU is a prestigious university in China,offering distinctive subjects mainly in shipbuilding industry,navy equipment,ocean exploration,and application of nuclear energy (SNON).HEU has become an important force in basic application research of ships,a key institute in the research and development of advanced navy equipment, and a backup force for developing Chinese marine technology.For many years,HEU has attached great importance to scientific research,resulting in many significant achievements which have filled in the gaps in the fields of marine engineering in China;for example,the first Chinese-made experimental submarine,the first hydrofoil,the first shipboard computer,and the first swath bathymeter for measuring the general configuration of submarine geomorphy have all been developed by the university.HEU also has taken the lead in the world with the achievements of II high-speed underwatervehicles (HUV),hovercraft,and thegradientsound velocimeter.Additionally,HEU has proven to be an outstanding technical force in the fields of shipping engineering and marine and nuclear applications,taking the lead domestically and even internationally with the technologies of high-speed underwater vehicles,fin stabilizers for ships,integrated navigation systems,acoustic positioning, and simulation of nuclear power.

HEU is taking an open,international course through cooperation with prestigious universities and scientific research institutes in places such as the USA,UK, Australia,Russia,Japan,and Korea,exchanging guest scholars and lecturers with those institutions.In this way,HEU has expanded her role and promoted her academic level.

In the 21st century,HEU is defining her distinctive position in the national defense and economic development strategy by specializing in the shipbuilding industry,navy equipment,ocean exploration,and application of nuclear energy (SNON).Also,HEU is dedicated to reforms in teaching and scientific research,as well as in the internal management system,sparing no effort to improve the quality of education and the level of scientific research and management,while increasing the economic benefit.HEU will continue to endeavor to teach her students the innovation that leads to scientific research achievements,transforming herself into a distinctive international university.
