David Nott, a surgeon with the volunteer group Doctors Without Borders, saved a teenage boy's life in the Congo - helped only by text messages. Nott, a vascular surgeon, realized that the sixteen-year old boy, whose left arm was bitten by a hippo, had no chance of survival unless he amputated the arm.
Since he had never performed this kind of operation before, Nott contacted a colleague in the UK who had. The two could only communicate by text message, as regular phone contact was impossible with the Congo's lack of connections. His colleague sent step-by-step instructions over the phone, and Nott successfully carried out the amputation, despite having only a primitive operations room and a single pint of blood to work with. The teenager is expected to make a full recovery.
