A series of attacks carried out by Islamic terrorists over Nov 26th to 29th wrecked the Indian city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The attackers, all young Pakistani men, entered the city in small boats, spreading out to carry out targeted attacks against several sites, including railway stations and Western hotels. They also assassinated specific individuals, such as several high-level police officers. They used a variety of weapons, including grenades, explosives, and assault rifles, killing more than 195 people and wounding hundreds more.
Indian authorities responded to the crisis as quickly as they could, but the attackers holed up, took hostages, and were able to fight off the Indian police and army for two more days. The last terrorists were killed or captured on Monday 28th, after they had murdered six hostages in the city's Jewish centre. The diplomatic fallout from the attacks, which the Indian government blames on Pakistan's encouragement of Islamic terrorists, led to threats of open war from both sides. With both countries armed with nuclear weapons, other nations intervened to calm things as best they could, but relations between the two countries are at their lowest point in years.
