Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was a wealthy English banker. After her parents divorced, Audrey went to London with her mother where she went to a private girl school. While vacationing with her mother in Holland, Hitlers army suddenly took over the town. It was here that she fell on hard times during the Nazi occupation. After the liberation, Audrey went to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and later began a modeling career. As a model, she was graceful and, it seemed, she had found her niche(位置) in life—until the film producers came calling. After being spotted modeling by a producer, she was signed up to a bit part in the European film Nederlands in 7 lessons in 1948. Later, she headed to America to try her luck there.
Audrey gained immediate prominence in the US with her role in Roman Holiday in 1953. This film turned out to be a big success as she won an Oscar as Best Actress. This gained her enormous popularity and more plum roles. Roman Holiday was followed by another similarly wonderful performance in the 1957 Classic Funny Face(1957). In 1959, she received yet another nomination(提名) for her role in Nuns Story. Audrey reached the top of her career when she played Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffanys in 1961. For this she received another nomination. One of Audreys most radiant(辉煌的) roles was in the fine production of My Fair Lady in 1964. Her co-star Rex Harrison once was asked to identify his favorite leading lady. Without hesitation, he replied, “Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady”.
By the end of the sixties, after her divorce from actor Mel Ferrer, Audrey decided to retire while she was on top. Later she married Dr. Andrea Dotti. In 1988, Audrey became a special ambassador to the UNICEF helping children in Latin America and Africa, a position she retained until 1993. She was named to Peoples magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. Audrey Hepburn died on January 20, 1993 in Switzerland. She had made a total of 31 high-quality movies.

In 1901, H.G.Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers (探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the “moon people”they met. In turn, the “moon people” expressed their surprise. “Why,” they asked, “are you travelling to outer space when you dont even use your inner space?” H.G. Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really didland on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel”, a tunnel(隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete. But what about underground cities? Japans Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems called“Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome(太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earths space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H.G. Wells “moon people” would agree. Would you?

There is no place like home—as long as it is far enough away, it seems.
Britain has become a nation of nomads(流浪者), with nearly half of us living more than 100 miles from the town or village where we grew up, research shows.
The trend is being fuelled by the Internet, better communications and property wealth.
People who move away fit into four separate categories—Sheep, Hens, Cows or Pigs.
Sheep are people who change home for economic and emotional peace. Hens are home and environment care-seekers. Cows are career or work shifters, while pigs are people caught up in grand parental support.
It is far from the common believed idea of Coronation Streets, where close-knit generations of the same family live within a few streets of each other throughout their lives. Less than 20 percent of people now live in the town where they were born. Instead, young adults move away to find work, get married or seek adventure.
Many use the Internet to work from a home which need not be within easy traveling distance of their workplace.
Also joining the moving crowd are older people who either move to be near grandchildren or retire to new homes.
One in ten of those who do make away makes a complete break, and now lives 500 miles or more from where they grew up.
Women are likely to leave as men, a sign of independence that would not have excited in the 1950s and 60s.
People in the North-East, North-West, Yorkshire and Scotland are the most likely to live in the community where they were born, the study found.
1. According to the research in the passage, British people tend to ____.

Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids(小行星) now,one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.
Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and dont threaten us. But there are also thousands whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.
Buy $ 50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $ 10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, well have a way to change its course.
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldnt be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. “If we dont take care of these big asteroids, theyll take care of us,” says one scientist. “Its that simple.” The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “The world has less to fear from doomsday(毁灭性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.
1. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids? ____.
A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition
B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature
C. There are more asteroids than meteoroids
D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids
2. We can conclude from the passage that ____.
A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world
B. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future
C. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime
D. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth
3. Which of the following best describes the authors tone in this pass- age? ____.

A man found the cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors (剪刀) and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.
The butterfly came out easily. But it then had a swollen(肿胀的) body and small, shriveled (皱缩) wings.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because hed expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. So he waited patiently.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It was never able to fly. What a shame!
What the man, in his kindness and fast action, did not understand was that the suffering and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny hole were natures way of forcing fluid(流体) from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If nature allowed us to go through our lives without any difficulties, it would weaken or even disable us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!
