A

All 11 major cities in Hebei Province, which surround the Olympic host city of Beijing, reported more “blue sky” days—or days with fairly good air quality—in 2007 than the previous year, government statistics show. “Blue sky” days in these cities averaged 313 last year, 14 more than in 2006 and 141 more than five years ago, figures from the Hebei Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau show. Major indices(指数) of air pollution decreased last year in the cities, said Yang Zhiming, the director of the bureau.

The provincial capital, Shijiazhuang, registered 289 “blue sky” days last year, two more than in 2006. The other 10 cities all saw more than 300 such days, with the highest measured at 354 in the seaside city of Qinhuangdao, 36 more than in 2006. Qinhuangdao, about 280 kilometers east of Beijing, is one of the five football places for the Aug. 8-24 Olympic Games.

Yang thinks the increase of “blue skies” mainly is the governments efforts to cut pollution and protect the environment in the past year, in addition to more windy and rainy days, which are favorable for diffusion(扩散) of atmospheric pollutants(污染物).

The local governments of Hebei, Shandong and Shanxi provinces, Tianjin Municipality and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have drawn up measures to improve air quality during the great international sports event, such as installing(安装) air-quality monitoring networks focused on heavily-polluting businesses. In Hebei, efforts to keep pollutants out of the capital include the installation of 34 desulphurization systems in power plants, construction of 23 central heating facilities that would help cut coal use, and 56 anti-pollution projects in the provinces

chemical industries, said Ji Zhenhai, director of the provincial environment bureau. The projects could reduce Hebeis yearly emissions(排放) of about 550,000 tons of sulphur dioxide(SO2), he said.

Its the Year of the Rat!

Millions of people crowded onto trains and buses across China on Wednesday. They were hurrying home to be with their families for the countrys most important holiday, the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival. Thursday marked the end of the Year of the Pig, and the beginning of the Year of the Rat. But for a while, it looked as if severe winter weather in some regions of China would put a deep freeze on the celebrations. Due to dangerous conditions, airlines, railways and highways across the country were forced to shut down for the past few weeks. Many travelers were worried that they would not make it home for the holidays. Luckily, the crisis started winding down just in time for some roads and railways to reopen on Lunar New Years Eve.

More than one billion people worldwide celebrate the Lunar New Year. In China, people from Beijing to Guangzhou enjoy a holiday. Businesses and government offices are closed. Many people go to temples to pray for good fortune for the future. The Lunar New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice(冬至).

On Lunar New Years Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings, and festivals. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with the lion dance. The lion is considered a holy animal. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions (or holding up elaborate paper lions in the air) perform to bring good luck to the people they visit at their homes or businesses. People often wear red, which symbolizes fire. Legend has it that fire can drive away bad luck. The 15-day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and families. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lamps are hung in parks around China.
