You can choose from a range of optional courses to take alongside compulsory courses for your degree program, which can complement what you are studying or be completely different.
Key points to consider
Remember to explore all the options—you can look at courses related to your degree or something completely different!
Look through how the course is structured, e.g. lectures, workshops, tutorials, lab sessions.
Check how the course is assessed, e.g. coursework and/or exams.
Check for timetable clashes(please note, you cannot take optional courses which clash with your compulsory classes).
If you have a meeting with your Personal Tutor(PT)or Student support Team, they can discuss your final choices—you should be prepared to have at least 3 different course options to discuss with your School.
Your school will be able to tell you whether your course choices are available and whether .
Know your credits on your program and find other courses
You will first need to know what degree program you are on(ie. Law and French)and check how many credits you have available for optional courses. Once you know how many credits you can use, start researching the course options available using this Hub, DPRS and Path.
DRPS(Degree Regulations and Programs of Study)
This is a helpful tool and an alternative way of viewing the same information that is shown on Path. DRPS is the University’s complete database of programs and course information available and updated each year. Not all courses are available to all students.
PATH
Path is the University’s visual course selection and program builder tool.
Path uses information from the DRPS, allowing you to review student feedback about courses and to consider your degree pathway, review your outside course choices and generate a DRAFT timetable(please note that this does not confirm your timetable, it is a simulation tool only).
Lastly, do remember that your school will be able to tell you whether your course choices are available and whether they will fit in with your program’s timetable.

Imagine it’s pouring d own outside and you’re curled up with a cup of hot chocolate, a soft blanket and your favorite book. How do you feel? People from Denmark would describe this cozy scene as“hygge”, and it can boost happiness.
Hygge(pronounced“hoo-ga”)is a Danish word, which translates as cosiness, warmth and comfort. Meik Wiking, who wrote The Little Book of Hygge, describes it as an atmosphere—a feeling of being safe and at home—and an experience, where we take time out to enjoy simple pleasures with loved ones. It is a way of life in Denmark.“There are no expectations other than being in the moment,”explains Danish education expert Iben Sandahl.
Everybody benefits from taking time out from their daily routine—school, homework and after-school activities—to snuggle, relax and recharge. Hygge also encourages people to appreciate small pleasures, like the first bite of a delicious pastry or sharing a new song you love with a friend. These pleasures are simple and inexpensive but they have been shown to bring joy and happiness. Helen Russell, a British author who lives in Denmark, says,“An important part of wellbeing is the strength of our relationships, and hygge encourages more quality time with loved ones.”
The senses are a great place to start. Hygge could mean the sight of pretty fairy lights; the sound of an open fire crackling; the touch of a fluffy blanket; the taste of warming hot chocolate; or the smell of bread baking in the oven. Creating a“hyggekrog”, which means a nook or a cubbyhole perfect for snuggling, is also helpful. Think of it as a cozy den, with pillows and blankets. Sandahl suggests inviting your parents and siblings to play a game, turning the living room floor into a disco or baking a cake. She says,“Put on some music you love and do not think that the cake should be perfect. Enjoy the process, set the table, light a candle and invite everyone to a hygge moment when the cake is made.”

d. It turns out to be an economical option for you.
A. abc
B. bcd

Cultural relics(文物)are part of a precious heritage with great historical, artistic and scientific value, but after years of burial, many cultural relics have been damaged and are in danger of disappearing.
“Inspired by the 2016 TV documentary Masters in Forbidden City, I felt like going on a mission to bring these cultural relics back to life,”said Wu Hui, 23.“That’s why I chose cultural relic restoration in college and work as a rookie(新手)restorer at the Sanxingdui Ruins site in Sichuan.”
Over 1,000 artifacts(器物)including bronzeware and face masks have been found in Sanxingdui. To help people better understand the restoration process, Sanxingdui opened China’s first publicly viewable relic restoration hall on Sept 28. With special instruments like electron microscopes(電子显微镜)and X-ray colorimeters(色度计),restorers detect and analyze the composition of cultural relics and make scientific repair plans in this relic hospital.
“Wu restores pottery, jades, bronzes and ivory works in the hall. In recent months, Wu and her coworkers have cleaned more than 180 pieces of ivory from 3,000 years ago. They wash the ivory carefully with purified water, using small bamboo knives to scrape off(刮掉)the dirt little by little, then collect the peeled-off pieces in case they need to glue them back together later.“Rotten ivory works will collapse with little strength, so we need to be especially cautious,”Wu said.“A good restorer also needs to be bold. For example, when we restore bronze works, we use surgical(外科的)knives and hammers. We have to be bold enough to make moves.”
As for Xie Li, 29, another restorer who has been engaged in the relic restoration in Sanxingdui for over seven years, repairing ivory works requires patience and archaeological(考古学的)knowledge. Since ivory loses water quickly after being unearthed, and is easy to crack and weather, Xie needs to wrap them up with a new biomimetic polymer(仿生高分子)bandage piece by piece. Xie also needs to cast them in plaster(石膏)after cleaning them in a special room.“Those bandages help to keep the moisture(水分)inside, prevent oxidation(氧化)and maintain their shapes. It’s like putting a mask on the ivory,”Xie said.
Restoration is a quiet and long process. However, it brings backstage heroes like Xie and Wu a great sense of accomplishment.“I felt happy to gradually see the beautiful textures on the ivory works. It’s like opening magical boxes-you never know what you’ll get before restoring it,”Wu said.
28. What information can we get from para 3?
A.Sanxingdui opened the first viewable relic restoration hall in the world.
B.The majority of the artifacts found in Sanxingdui are bronzeware and face masks.
C. If you go to Sanxingdui in October, you can have a close look at the restoration process.
D. Not all artifacts are in need of special instruments to get repaired.
29. Which of the following word can replace the underlined“weather”in para 5?
A. wear
B. forecast
C. withstand
D. climate
30. What words can be used to describe Wu Hui?
A. knowledgeable and determined
B. aggressive and skillful
C. kind and strong-willed
D. brave and cautious
31. What can be concluded from the restoration process of artifacts?
A. If not dealt with caution, artifacts will encounter catastrophic damage.
B. Electron microscopes and X-ray colorimeters have played the biggest role in the process.
C. Restorers need to use masks to prevent ivory from oxidation.
D. A good restorer can be either careful or bold in the restoration process.
D
Artificial intelligence is more present in our lives than ever: it predicts what we want to say in emails, helps us navigate and improves our weather reports. But the technology isn’t always beneficial. The data sets used to build AI often aren’t representative of the diversity of the population, so it can result in discriminatory practices or biases(偏見).
One example is face-recognition technology. This is used to access our mobile phones, bank accounts and apartment buildings, and is increasingly employed by police forces. But it can have problems accurately identifying women and Black people.
For three such programs released by major tech companies, the error rate was only 1 percent for light-skinned men, but 19 percent for dark-skinned men and up to a surprising 35 percent for dark-skinned women. Biases in face-recognition technologies have led to wrongful arrests.
Last week at UNESCO, 193 countries reached a groundbreaking agreement on how AI should be designed and used by governments and MIC tech companies. UNESCO’Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence took two years to put together and involved thousands of online consultations with people from a diverse range of social groups. It aims to fundamentally shift the balance of power between ordinary people and the businesses and governments developing AI.
Countries have agreed to implement this recommendation by using laws to regulate the design and deployment of AI. This means they must use affirmative action to make sure women and minority groups are fairly represented on AI design teams. Such action could take the form of quota systems that ensure these teams are diverse.
UNESCO now expects two things to happen. Firstly, governments and companies will voluntarily begin to make their AI systems comply with the principles laid out in the recommendation. Secondly, governments will begin to legislate(立法)using the recommendation as a manual. Countries will be obliged to report on the progress of their legislation and UNESCO will monitor this.
With this agreement, we are confident of putting AI to work where it can have the most impact on the world’s greatest challenges.
32. What is the disadvantage of artificial intelligence?
A. It has limited applications in real life.
B. It contributes to unfairness in gender and human races.
C. It might impair people’s privacy.
D.Ithasproblemsinaccuratelyidentifyingcriminals.
33. The figures listed in para 3 shows that.
A. AI companies need to collect more samples to develop face-recognition technologies
B. less black people are fond of using the AI technology
C. wrong arrests are partly due to the inaccuracy of face-recognition technologies
D. the diversity of the population is worth considering when companies develop AI technology
34. What of the following words has similar meaning to the underlined word“groundbreaking”?
A. Pioneering.B. Significant.
C. Constructive.D. Newfound.
35. What measures can those countries signing the agreement take to meet the requirement?
A. To consult people of various cultural backgrounds.
B. To regulate and design their AI systems guided by the recommendation of UNESCO.
C. To set laws to punish those who fail to meet the standards of AI technology.
D. To shift the balance of power between ordinary people and the AI companies.
