Christmas Pieces
Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach
Bach’s Oratorio was composed for the Christmas of 1734. It’s divided into six parts—each with its own sound and story—that would have been performed separately on feast days during the Christmas season. Profound and reflective, it contains some of the most appealing choruses and moving arias you’ll ever hear.
The Nutcracker by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
The Nutcracker is a firm Christmas mainstay and a master class in musical storytelling. Enchanting, imaginative and wholesome, the piece is the bread and butter of ballet companies around the world.
Messiah by George Frideric Handel
Handel’s crowning achievement is widely considered to be one of the most performed pieces during the holiday season around the world. Famous for its thrilling chorus, Messiah was surprisingly not intended for Christ-mas originally. Handel wrote it with the Easter Lent in mind.
A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten
This choral piece was inspired by medieval English poetry from The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, which Britten purchased while on a five-week voyage from New York to Britain in 1942. Featuring beautiful chants and heavenly harp parts, the piece feels both modern and ancient.
21.Which piece will you choose if you are a ballet fan?

C. Messiah.
D. A Ceremony of Carols.
22. Which of the following is true of Messiah?

When I was young, I read about a Frenchman called Michel Sifter who spent weeks alone in a cave in 1962 to see what would happen to his body rhythm. The idea of living without the structure of time became a dream, and when lockdown came, schedules people had kept all their lives are disordered, I saw a chance to repeat the experiment.
I found a cave in the French Pyrenees where I could go with 14 others who volunteered to join the expedition. Inside the cave, we would not be allowed to speak with our friends or family, or receive updates about the outside world. There was only one absolute rule: we had to follow our natural rhythm. We mustn’t wake other people, or do anything that felt unnatural, but just follow our feelings: if I want to go to sleep, I go to sleep; if I want to eat, I eat. There was always at least one person awake.
It’s a strange feeling to wake and not have a watch to tell you if you’ve slept enough. But soon it felt freeing. After a while, people got familiar with the cave and began to forget to do chores and work tasks. There were arguments over food and washing-up. It was impossible to organize group tasks in these conditions, so after 17 cycles, or sleeps, we had a big group meeting to clear the air. After that, we began to unite and to coordinate more, developing a strong bond between us.
In the end, we were happy there. Following your own rhythm is an incredible freedom. When we were told it was over, we didn’t feel ready to go out, but leaving was like a rebirth.
I think, as a society, we should reconsider the way we spend our time. We wake up because it’s time to wake up and to work, but we forget to listen to our bodies. If I had to live like this for a long time, it would be nice.
24. Why did the author carry out the experiment?
A. To realize his dream.
B. To get close to nature.
C. To pass his spare time.
D. To restore people’s life.
25. What could the people in the cave do?
A. Sleep and eat naturally.
B. Receive the latest news.
C. Chat online with friends.
D. Volunteer to wake others.
26. What does the underlined phrase“clear the air”mean?
A. Clean up the cave.
B. Make the air fresh.
C. Complete work tasks.
D. Remove negative emotions.
27. What is the author’s suggestion?
A. Getting adequate sleep every day.
B. Planning a schedule ahead of time.
C. Developing a strong bond in society.
D. Paying attention to our natural body rhythm.

What if you could touch a loved one during a video call or pick up and handle a virtual tool in a video game? These ideas could become reality in a couple of years after UNSW Sydney engineers developed a new haptic(觸觉的)device which recreates the sense of touch.
Dr.Thanh Nho Do, Scientia Lecturer and UNSW Medical Robotics Lab director, is senior author of a study featuring the new device. Their three-way directional skin stretch device(SSD), built into the fingertips of the wearable haptic glove we also created, is like wearing a second skin—it’s soft, stretchable and imitates the sense of touch—and will enable new forms of haptic communication to enhance everyday activities.
The new technology overcame issues with existing haptic devices by introducing a novel method to recreate an effective haptic sensation via soft, tiny artificial“muscles”. It works like this: imagine you are in Australia while your friend is in the United States. You wear a haptic glove with our integrated three-way directional SSDs in the fingertips and your friend also wears a glove with integrated 3-D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s fingers and the glove with 3-D force sensors will measure these interactions. If these 3-D force signals are sent to your haptic glove, then the integrated three-way directional SSDs will generate these exact 3-D forces at your fingertips, enabling you to experience the same sense of touch as your friend.
Dr. Do said,“Our technology is soft, lightweight, and thin and therefore, we hope users will be able to integrate it into what they’re wearing to provide realistic haptic experiences in settings including education, training and recreation. In addition, we plan to implement the device in various haptic applications such as navigational assistance for older people and those with low vision in the next 18 months to three years.”
28. What is the feature of the new haptic device?
A. It is recyclable.
B. It is flexible.
C. It is weighty.
D. It is delicate.
29. How does the author explain the working principle of the device?
A. By giving an example.
B. By introducing a theory.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By presenting a definition.
30. What does Dr. Do say about the device?
A. It has broad application prospects.
B. It is more suitable for older people.
C. It has hit the market for three years.
D. It is able to be implanted into the skin.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new haptic device recreating the sense of touch.
B. High-tech gloves with integrated 3-D force sensors.
C. Analysis and application of virtual reality technology.
D. Various haptic applications of a new glove-like device.

“Consider the subtleness of the sea,”warned Herman Melville in“Moby Dick”,“how its most dreaded(可怕的)creatures glide under water...treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure.”Nearly 170 years later, another marine horror is just becoming visible.
Satellite has revealed“dark fleets”of fishing boats that turn off their transponders(应答器)and steal the ocean’s bounty. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing accounts for a 20~50% of the global catch. Illegal operators rob mostly poor coastal states of over $20bn a year and threaten the livelihoods of millions of small fishermen. A huge amount of illegal fishing happens on licensed boats, too. They might catch more than their quota, or falsely declare their catch as abundant albacore tuna(長鳍金枪鱼)instead of the more valuable bigeye. In port fisheries inspectors are always overstretched. If an operator is caught, for instance, fishing with too fine a net, the fine and confiscation are seen as a cost of doing business. Many pay up and head straight back out to sea.
The damage from illegal fishing goes well beyond fish stocks. Operators committing one kind of crime are likely to be committing others, too—cutting the fins off sharks, or even running drugs. Many are also abusing their crews. Tens of thousands of migrant workers, mainly from South-East Asia, man the world’s fleets. Many workers work hard at sea in terrible conditions with violent masters.
Based on this situation, governments should agree at the WTO to cancel the subsidies(补贴)that promote overfishing, making half of high-seas fishing no longer be profitable. Some of the money that was saved could help restore coastal fisheries for millions of small-scale fishermen. It could help establish fish farming, feeding on insects. Fishing does not have to be a fishy business.
32.Why does the author quote Herman Melville’s words?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To recommend a book.
C. To support his argument.
D. To describe an ocean scene.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Inspectors perform duties strictly.
B. Licensed boats seldom break the rule.
C. Two thirds of the global catch is illegal.
D. Punishment fails to prevent illegal fishing.
34. What is the author’s purpose to write the text?
A. To describe threats faced by sea creatures.
B. To explore the reasons behind illegal fishing.
C. To investigate the damage caused by overfishing.
D.Toarousethegovernment’sattentiontoillegalfishing.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Creatures at Sea
B. Types of Overfishing
C. Monsters of the Deep
D. Regulations on Illegal Fishing

It’s not an overstatement to suggest that creativity may be one of the most important features a person can have. 36
Keep us engaged.37Typical examples are depression and Alzheimer’s. Seeking out ways of creativity pushes us to keep learning and interacting, whether it’s finding a piece of data online or developing social relationships with other curious, like-minded individuals. Much like exercise works out our body and maintains our physical health, creativity, and the processes involved with discovery, ensure us maintain our mental well-being, as well.
38 Engaging in creative efforts produce a similar effect on our brain as that of meditation. It doesn’t matter the activity either. By losing ourselves in some activity that stimulates our imagination such as reading, writing, knitting, baking, listening to music and yes, even creating a new procedure for business, the process helps us relieve pressure.
Improve necessary skills. Creativity isn’t only about the creation of something new. 39 For example, engaging in creative exercises helps build our problem-solving skills from finding a new method of completing an old task or generating something that is totally brand new. It also provides us with the path to be more open-minded and patient with others. 40
A. Help reduce stress.
B. Help stimulate imagination.
C. This ensures that we are willing to accept more ideas.
D. Engaging in many activities is good for our mental health.
E. It leads to developing vital skills we need to be successful.
F. Taking a creative approach can impact us in many positive ways.
G. Many health problems result from us losing contact with the larger world.
