When dogs get lonely, they like keeping themselves busy by making a big mess around the house. Thats why one German radio host, Stock, who also happens to be a dog owner came up with the idea for a program designed to relax dogs and make them feel like they arent alone.
Everyone thought it was just a clever April Fools trick (技法) at first. However, it wasnt. For the past three and a half months, the German radio host has been playing music for lonely dogs both on the radio and online.
Stock says he was inspired to create the special program by his pet dog, Layla, who would sometimes get so bored when left alone that she would keep herself busy by making a big mess around the house. He managed to find a solution to the problem. He researched what kind of music is usually loved by dogs, and learnt that it should have as little electric guitar as possible, and should be very slow.
“Its not about keeping dogs quiet,” Stock said. “Its more about the dog feeling hes not alone.” He adds that Layla isnt anxious since listening to the music, and has become relatively quiet, even letting him have a sleep to the music from the radio.
If youd like to see if it can calm your pet, the program can also be accessed (訪问) online here. Just press the “play” arrow (箭头) at the top of the page and let the music work its music.

2. What did people think of Stocks program for dogs?
A. They didnt think it works well. B. They didnt take it seriously.

4. Where can we most probably read this text?
A. On a website. B. In a newspaper. C. In a pet magazine. D. In a research report.

The worlds African elephants are in serious danger. 1 And if we do nothing to put an end to the ivory (象牙) trade, elephants will die out in the wild within the next 20 years.
Many believe that a bad hunter could get ivory without killing the elephant—this is not true. Only two-thirds of an elephants ivory sticks out of their mouth. 2 The tusk (長牙) is not just bone but rather it is alive, filled with nerves and blood vessels (血管) and when broken off, the tusks would likely become infected (感染) and lead to a slow and painful death.
However, there is a new form of hope rising from nature itself. African elephants are being born without the tusks. But why are these elephants on earth now being born tuskless? 3
Is such change beneficial to elephants survival in the long term? As we know, elephants tusks are not just beautiful surface. 4 Therefore, scientists are just beginning to track the newly tuskless among them to see how this change influences the animals.
Ivory hunters are not the only danger faced by elephants today. And more support is needed than ever to create a safe world where elephants can live together with humans happily. 5
A. And the rest lies under the surface.
B. And its in our power to make this happen.
C. Because many African elephants are tuskless.
D. They also have important uses such as digging.
E. Thats because it cuts down harms for their survivals.
F. We should improve awareness of protecting the animals.
G. It is said that one is killed every 15 minutes for their ivory.

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue (救援) and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help wounded or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Mutton town. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. I checked the young owl and it seemed fine. If I could find the position of the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to make a nest and fix it in a tree. I put some pine branches into a basket that I found to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the owl in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger call of young owls. These advertise the presence of baby owls to adults; they might also encourage our young owl to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had heard the sound. I drove over and saw the young owl in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied (陪伴) in the nest by the greatest sight of all-LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Snow leopards (雪豹) are so hard to photograph that scientists arent even sure how many of these endangered (瀕危的) animals still live in the wild.
The Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC) set up 20 cameras in Russia in 2010 to learn more about the big cats. After a full six months, they had exactly zero picture! Thats when the organization understood they needed help. And the only people who could help them in finding the leopards were the people from whom they wanted to protect the animals—local hunters.
Hunting snow leopards is against the law in Russia, but in the terrible climate of Siberia, the few people living there had to turn to poaching (盗猎) to feed their families.
In 2013, Russian naturalist Sergei approached Markov, a local hunter, and told him his project. Markov agreed to set up the camera where he knew he would find leopards, and it worked.
Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras tracking leopards. “I visit each camera once a month. I have known this whole area since I was a child,” he said proudly.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began working with other local villagers in 2015. The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the image of a snow leopard is caught. WWF also rents horses from the villagers so that they do not need to make money by poaching anymore.
Changing guns for cameras has made a big difference in the lives of these former poachers, the village, and the Russian snow leopards. The number of snow leopards has been rising and their population is expected to recover to normal levels within 10 years.
5. Why was no picture of snow leopards taken in six months?
A. The cameras failed to work. B. Snow leopards got endangered.
C. Local hunters destroyed these cameras. D. The scientists poorly prepared for them.
6. What did Sergei want Markov to do?
A. Find the poachers. B. Work for the SLC.
C. Make money for him. D. Repair cameras in the forest.
7. Why did the WWF begin working with local villagers?
A. To tell them not to hunt animals. B. To help them make a living.
C. To get some pictures of snow leopards. D. To buy their horses at a low price.
8. How can we describe the WWFs work with the villagers?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Old habits die hard.
C. Kill two birds with one stone. D. Curiosity kills the cat.
