怎样用英语表示“变小”

在高中英语课本中，表“变小”的动词屡见不鲜，主要有以下几个：abate、cut、decrease、diminish、down-size、narrow、reduce、shrink。从广义上讲，这些动词都含有“（使）变小”的意思，但从狭义上来讲，它们之间又存在着词义和语用上的微妙差别。下面笔者着重对这些动词的用法进行剖析，并举例加以说明。

1.abate：可作及物或不及物动词，表示自然灾害、污染等威力或强度的减小;也可以表示某种情绪的减弱或缓和。例如：

Nothing could abate his rage.

什么都不能平息他的愤怒。

She is trying to abate the tension between her parents.

她试着缓和她父母的紧张关系。

The ship sailed when the storm abated.

这船在暴风雨减弱时起航。

2.cut：可作及物或不及物动词，表示（用刀等从某物上）切下、割下、剪下或砍下;同时可以表示头发、指甲、草等剪短或修剪;另外，还可以表示谈话、关系、沟通等的停止或结束;最后，也可以表示数量、价格等的减少、削减。例如：

This knife is not sharp enough to cut the steak.

这把刀子不够利，无法切牛排。

Japan cut diplomatic ties with the country.

日本与那个国家断绝了外交关系。

Face round， please， so that I can cut your hair at the back.

转一下头，好让我可以剪你后面的头发。

3.decrease：可作及物或不及物动词，表示大小、数量、规模、范围、价格等的减小或降低。例如：

They are making further efforts to decrease mili-tary spending.

他们正在做进一步的努力来减少军费开支。

The price of wheat decreased by 15% last year.

去年小麦价格降低了15%。

People planted trees on the waste hills to decrease water and soil loss.

人們在荒丘上种植了树木，以减少水土流失。

4.diminish：可作及物或不及物动词，表示数量、范围、规模的减少或减弱，与decrease同义，可互换使用;也可以表示对权威、尊严、名誉、价值、贡献等的贬低或轻视。例如：

The world's resources are rapidly diminishing.

世界资源正在迅速减少。

His influence has diminished with time.

随着时间的推移，他的影响已不如从前了。

I don't wish to diminish the importance of their conribution.

我并不想贬低他们所做贡献的重要性。

5.downsize：可作及物或不及物动词，表示以较小尺寸制造或设计产品;也可以表示公司、企业等裁员或精减。例如：

Sales have decreased so much that they need to downsize.

销售业绩减少很多，所以他们必须缩小规模。

The company chose to downsize and more fully uti-lize the remaining workers.

公司决定缩小规模，并更加充分地用好余下的工人。

It seems that the only way out is to cut some pro-grams and downsize our organization.

看来唯一的出路是减少一些慈善项目和精简我们的机构。

6.narrow：可作及物或不及物动词，表示范围、宽度或差距等变小、变窄。例如：

They planned to narrow the gap between imports and exports.

他们计划缩小进出口的差额。

In order to widen the road they have to narrow the pavement.

为了拓宽道路只好将人行道弄窄。

He had to narrow his eyes in the strong light of the sun.

在强烈的阳光下，他只得眯着眼睛。

7.reduce：可作及物或不及物动词，表示重量、程度、数目、范围、速度等减少或降低，不仅可以指量的变化，还可以指质的转变;也可以引申为降职、使……陷入某种状态或状况中、将……概括或简化、将……还原。例如：

The new government's prime task is to reduce the level of inflation.

新政府的主要任务是减低通货膨胀的水平。

We need to reduce our dependence on oil as a source of energy.

在能源方面，我们需减少对石油的依赖。

It reduces the risks of heart disease.

它减小了犯心脏病的危险。

8.shrink：可作及物或不及物动词，表示衣物因洗涤或熨烫后缩水、缩小;同时可以表示尺寸、数量等的减少、缩小，与reduce、decrease同义，可互换使用;另外，还可以表示因害怕或震惊而退缩、畏缩。例如：

Will this woolen sweater shrink when washed？

这件羊毛衫洗后会缩水吗？

The company's profit margins shrank from 32.5%to 17%.

该公司的边际利润率从32.5%降到了17%。

We will never shrink from difficulties.

我们在困难面前决不退缩。

总之，这些动词既有许多相似之处，又有一定的区别。同学们如果想要真正地理解并正确地使用，就要分清它们各自的词义、使用范围以及固定搭配，并灵活运用。
