Live up to our Mission, Fight on the Frontline

It was February 25, 2020, the 34th day that the 1.4 billion Chinese people had been battling against COVID-19. As the domestic epidemic was effectively under control, the prevention of imported cases turned into the top priority of our work. A team was immediately established as soon as our office received the mission and all chosen colleagues devoted themselves with no hesitation to the frontline at the airport.

Our team is composed of heroes and heroines. There is mom having two toddlers and sick parents, dad who had to isolate himself with a blanket to hug his kid, newly-wed bridegroom residing in airport hotel for two months and senior division chief over 50s still taking the initiative to work on the frontline. We pledged to safeguard this beloved city with our actions by overcoming the difficulties and sparing no efforts.

Our team is a tough one that takes the due responsibility and is capable of bearing hardships.Initially, we feared to get infected. But all the fears and worries were instantly put aside the minute we got fully involved into the task on hand. During peak hours, it is quite common that one staff was assisting 4 to 5 passengers at the same time. My memory about our first night shift is still fresh today. After a whole day’s harworking, we were shocked by the information that there were going to be 93 passengers in the last flight arriving in the midnight until the flight took off. It contradicted to the previously reported 30.Our team leader made an urgent adjustment to the placements of the 10 colleagues and asked for 3 more shuttle buses to be on site. When finishing the work at the airport, we were respectively assigned to the 5 buses and escorted them to the hotel. It was not until 5 am that all the passengers were settled down safe and sound and we went back home. In those days, I have seen the bloody eyes, the faces with the visible imprints, the wet shirts and the tiring sleeping looks. All these scenes will be carved into my mind that I will never forget.

Our team is a caring one that comforts the passengers and eases their anxiety. Some passengers from European countries or the US transferred via Japan or South Korea felt exhausted after over 30 hours long flight and another 3 to 4 hours within the customs. Looking at their annoyed faces, we always did our utmost to comfort them in a patient manner. I remember one day, an American young man departing from Washington D.C. weakly came to the counter. Knowing he ate nothing on the plane till then, we handed him a bottle of water and our lunch box. The 6 feet-tall man burst into tears and kept saying thanks.Working at the airport is like a rewarding journey we learn from the very beginning how to communicate with the different people. To the passengers of rude words and in bad temper, we thank you for finally being pacified by our smiling faces and tender voices. To those expressing your understanding and gratitude, we thank you for your nice behaviors and full cooperation. Thanks to all of you, all the painstaking efforts are worth it and your kind words motivated us to work even harder.

As Premier Li Keqiang said, the post-COVID 19 world will be a more open one and the posteconomic-recession world will open up new prospects. We will continue playing our leading role in the city’s opening up, contribute to the upgrade of our friendly exchanges and expand Dalian’s circle of friends in the bright future!
