The groundbreaking airport features a series of leaning metal arches and steel beams that support the terminaI’s unduIating roof structure and highIight its dramatic profiIe against the sky.
Dominating a key position in the global race for luxury air travel and transfer points, the Midfield Terminal Complex will process up to 80 million passengers each year to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding capital. The terminal’s design and engineering overcomes significant challenges intrinsic to its complex program, achieving unsurpassed levels of technical and material craft. Its modified, X form minimizes passenger walking times, complemented by sweeping, monumental arches. Each bridging 180 meters, the long-span, leaning arches make possible the nearly column-free, 50-meterhigh space of the Departure Hall – a civic atrium that provides an open, outdoor atmosphere.
KPF’s team engaged in a bespoke design process that valued the project’s incredible complexity equally to its most intricate details. The undulating arches visually separate from the roof, reinforcing the project’s lightweight quality and feel. Originally composed of 150,000 unique panels, the team rationalized the roof down to 15,000 pieces. Seamless transitions – flooring that turns into furniture, landscaping that permeates the building – illustrate careful consideration at every turn.
Passenger experience will be transformed at every level of Abu Dhabi’s new terminal. Certain moments remind the majority of transfers that they are, in fact, in the city of Abu Dhabi. At the micro level, wayfinding elements remain culturally sensitive. Patterns, rather than figures, echo the traditions of Islamic art – carried through from the carpeting to the quarry stone. The continuous ceiling needs to both reflect light and control sound, resolved by challenging conventional material choices.
