英语中的定冠词the，主要用于名词之前表示某个（些）特定的人或事物，有this、that、these、those的含义。

一、下列情况要用定冠词the

1.特指某个（些）人或事物。例如：

The boy in black shoes is Jack.穿黑色鞋的男孩是杰克。

2.表示双方都知道的或上文已提及的人或物的前面。例如：

Close the door，please.请关门。

She has a car.The car is red.她有一辆小汽车。那辆小汽车是红色的。

3.用在世界上独一无二的事物名称前面。例如：

The sun is much bigger than the moon.太阳比月亮大多了。

4.用在形容词最高级或序数词的前面。例如：

The fifth book is mine.第五本书是我的。

This is the most educational movie that I have ever seen.这是我所看过的最有教育意义的电影。

5.用在演奏某种乐器的名称前面。例如：

She plays the violin better than I.她演奏小提琴比我演奏得好。

6.用在表示方向或方位的名词前面。例如：

in the south在南方

to the north向北方

7.用在复数姓氏前面表示夫妇二人或全家人。例如：The Greens are fond of music.格林全家人都喜欢音乐。

8.用在江、河、海、山脉、大洋、群岛等名称前面。例如：

the Yellow River黄河

the Pacific Ocean太平洋

the Himalayas喜马拉雅山脉

9.普通名词变成专有名词时或整十的数词的复数形式表示年代。例如：

the Great Wall长城

the United States美国

in the thirties在三十年代

in the sixties在六十年代

10.用在某些固定搭配中。例如：

by the way

in the morning

at the same time

at the age of

on the other hand

【拓展】某些形容词前面加the指某一类人。例如：

the poor穷人们

the rich富人们

the young年轻人们the old老人们

the sick病人们

the disabled残疾人们

二、有无the的意义不同

at table在吃饭—at the table在饭桌旁

on earth究竟—on the earth在地球上

in class在课堂上—in the class在班级同学中

in secret秘密地—in the secret知情

in office在执政—in the office在办公室

in future今后—in the future将来

in front of在……前面—in the front of在……前部

in sight of能看见—in the sight of根据……的见解

in place of替代—in the place of在……的地方

in prison蹲监狱—in the prison在监狱里（不一定是蹲监狱）

in charge of负责……—in the charge of由……负责

in control of掌控……—in the control of由……掌控

leave school毕业；辍学—leave the school离开学校

take advice征求建议—take the advice接受建议

take place发生—take the place of取代

out of question没问题—out of the question不可能的

by sea乘船—by the sea在大海旁

by day在白天—by the day按日计算

be in hospital因病住院—be in the hospital在医院里（不一定是看病）

go to school去上学—go to the school到学校去（不是去读书）

go to bed上床睡觉—go to the bed到床那里去

go to church去做礼拜—go to the church到教堂去

go to sea出海—go to the sea到海边去
