从中国典籍英译特点出发看顾译《孝经》

摘要：本文从中国典籍英译特点出发，浅析顾丹柯所译《孝经·二十四孝·弟子规》的《孝经》译文部分并加以拙见。

关键词：《孝经》；典籍英译

一、中国典籍英译的特点

中国的典籍内涵丰富，译者译前需研读古典原文文本，了解相关的中国历史和文化常识，反复推敲汉语文言文。译文的受众为西方人民，我们要注重其可读性就不可加注过多典故注释，并注意适当采取归化策略。

二、对顾译《孝经》的浅析与拙见

顾所译《孝经》译文《天子章第二》中“《甫刑》云：‘一人有庆，兆民赖之。’”顾译为：Marquis Fu on Punishments of the Book of History says，“If the Son of Heaven is committed to virtuous deeds，the common people can rely on him.” 将“天子”译为the Son of Heaven，且大写Son及Heaven，“天之子”的含义正好对应西方文化中的“上帝之子耶稣”，是最有影响力的人，最有神力的人，翻译很到位。但笔者认为将“兆民”译为the common people欠妥。根据《古汉语常用字字典》第4版，“兆”的释义为：数词。古代以“百万”或“万亿”为兆，常用来表示极多。因此，笔者认为应将“极多”这层含义传达给西方读者。《卿大夫章第四》内容为“非先王之法服不敢服，非先王之法言不敢道，非先王之德行不敢行。是故非法不言，非道不行。口无择言，身无择行，言满天下无口过，行满天下无怨恶。三者备矣，然后能守其宗庙，盖卿大夫之孝也。《诗》云：‘夙夜匪懈，以事一人。’”顾译文如下：

The robes not prescribed apt for the ranks by the ancient king，ministers and senior officials dare not wear；the utterances not prescribed appropriate for the rites by the ancient king，ministers and senior officials dare not utter；and the deeds not prescribed proper for morality by the ancient king，ministers and senior officials dare not do.Therefore，ministers and senior officials should not wear what is not right for the rites，and do what is not right for the rites.……If your robes，utterances and conducts are in conformity with what the ancient king prescribed，you will be able to keep your family temples.And that is the filial piety of a minister and high official.

The Book of Poetry says，“From morning till evening，you should serve the king with untiring efforts and devotion.”

顾译考虑了语句平衡和语义对称，但西方读者并不要求读到过多的重复句式，笔者认为“卿大夫”翻译应一致，前文为ministers and senior officials，后面就不要改为a minister and high official。同样，“一人”的翻译也不应到了此章改为了the king。此外，前面为第三人称，后面改为第二人称较为突兀，且“三者备矣，然后能守其宗庙”中“其”已表示第三人称。最后，关于《诗经》的翻译，由于所有诗歌皆为劳动人民生活所吟唱的歌谣，所以译为the Book of Songs应更贴切。

三、结语

中国文化典籍，内涵丰富深厚，翻译道路艰难而漫长。真心期待更多国内译者不断研习中华典籍古今中外各个译本，脚踏实地地研究总结各种典籍英译的理论和技巧，为将中国文化推向世界做出自己的贡献。
