“Well, I dont really know yet,” said Mr. Zuckerman. “But we havereceived a sign, Edith—a mysterious sign. A 1)miracle has happened onthis farm. There is a large spiders web in the doorway of the barn 2)cellar,right over the pigpen, and when Lurvy went to feed the pig this morning,he noticed the web because it was foggy, and you know how a spidersweb looks very distinct in a fog. And right 3)spang in the middle of theweb there were the words ‘Some Pig. The words were woven right intothe web. They were actual part of the web, Edith. I know, because I havebeen down there and seen them. It says, ‘Some Pig, just as clear asclear can be. There can be no mistake about it. A miracle has happenedand a sign has occurred here on earth, right on our farm, and we have noordinary pig.”

“Well,” said Mrs. Zuckerman, “it seems to me youre a little off. Itseems to me we have no ordinary spider.”

“Oh, no,” said Zuckerman. “Its the pig thats unusual. It says so, rightthere in the middle of the web.”

“Maybe so,” said Mrs. Zuckerman. “Just the same, I intend to have alook at that spider.”

“Its just a common grey spider,” saidZuckerman.

They got up, and together they walked downto Wilburs yard.

“You see, Edith? Its just a common grey spider.”

Wilbur was pleased to receive so much attention.Lurvy was still standing there, and Mr. and Mrs. Zuckermanall three, stood for about an hour, reading the words on theweb over and over, and watching Wilbur.

Charlotte was delighted with the way her trickwas working. She sat without moving a muscle, and listened to the conversation of the people. When a small fly 4)blundered into the web, justbeyond the word “pig”, Charlotte dropped quicklydown, rolled the fly up, and carried it out of the way.

After a while the fog lifted. The web dried off and the words didntshow up so plainly. The Zuckermans and Lurvy walked back to the house.Just before they left the pigpen, Mr. Zuckerman took one last look atWilbur.

“You know,” he said, in an important voice, “Ive thought all alongthat that pig of ours was an extra good one. Hes a solid pig. That pig isas solid as they come. You notice how solid he is around the shoulders,Lurvy?”

“Sure. Sure I do,” said Lurvy. “Ive always noticed that pig. Hes quite a pig.”

“Hes long, and hes smooth,” said Zuckerman.

“Thats right,” agreed Lurvy. “Hes as smooth as they come. Hes some pig.”

When Mr. Zuckerman got back to thehouse, he took off his work clothes andput on his best suit. Then he got into hiscar and drove to the ministers house. Hestayed for an hour and explained to theminister that a miracle had happened onthe farm.

1) miracle n.

2) cellar n. 地窖

3) spang adv.

4) blunder v.
