Li Bai (701-762) was also called Taibai (courtesy name), or Qinglian Jushi (literary name). He was known as one of the greatest romantic poets of the Tang dynasty. His ancestral home was in Chengji, Longxi (present-day Tianshui, Gansu Province), but when he was five, he moved with his father to Qinglian town, in Changming, Mianzhou (now Jiangyou, Sichuan Province).
There is a legend about Li bai. He was not hard-working when he was young. He was often absent from school. One day he saw an old woman working on a large piece of iron. He was surprised and asked what she was doing. She said she wanted to make the iron into a needle and she must work hard every day. Li Bai suddenly understood the importance of hard work, and from then on he started to work hard at school.
Li Bai was a swordman and he loved nature very much. When he was 24 years old, he left home and began to travel around with his sword. He travelled to many beautiful mountains and rivers and met many friends like Meng Haoran and Du Fu. During his life he wrote a lot of famous poems, such as Thoughts on a Silent Night, The waterfall in Mount Lu Viewed from Afar and so on.

Thoughts on a Silent Night
Before my bed a pool of light—
Is it hoarfrost upon the ground?
Eyes raised, I see the moon so bright;
Head bent, in homesickness I’m drowned.

The Waterfall in Mount Lu Viewed from Afar
The sunlit Censer Peak exhales incense-like cloud,
The cataract hangs like upended stream sounding loud.
Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from high,
As if the Silver River fell from azure sky.
