While the pandemic has prevented peoplefromtravelingafar, there'sasilverliningtothat dark cloud: micro- tourism, or mini- vacations.

Micro-tourism refers to short-distance travel in which people drive two or three hours to anearby destination and spend two or three days.Instead of requiring an elaborate plan and a lotof money, micro- tourismallows people to bemore flexible and is less expensive.

According to China Daily, micro- tourismbegan catching on seven or eight years ago, but ithas been increasingly popular since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pandemic preventionandcontrol measures making long and distant tripsless convenient, more and more Chinese peoplechoose to take short trips instead.

Mark Hou from Beijing is one of them. Be-forethepandemic,the 28- year- oldpreferredtakinglong tripsabroador leaving Beijing tosee places of interests in other Chinese provinces. But the pandemic meant he had to adapt to anew travel style.

would be likely to increase the chances of infection,”Housaid.“Tostayhealthy,short- distance travel is the better choice.”

But thatdoesn't mean Hou haslostfunduring his short trips.

After a long and tiring week at work, Houlikes to invite three or four friends and drive toBeijing'ssuburbsonweekends. Sometimestheywillhaveahotspringgathering. Othertimes, they just bring camping gear, a camera, somefoodand water, and wanderaround themountains or parks.

“Inthepeachblossomseason, wegotothe mountains with many peach trees. Walkingin the mountains, we not only get the fresh airand have exercise, but also enjoy the beauty offlowers,”Hou explained.“When we feel tired,we can pitch a tent to rest and have a picnic. That can ease tensions of daily life.”

To adapt to the new trend, many cities alsocreate moreopportunitiesfor tourists. Forex-ample, in 2020, Shanghai launched a number ofmicro- tourism products for half- day and one-day tours, including exploring cultural heritagesites in the city, experiencing rural life and goinghiking. Destinationsaroundcities, parks, campsites and resorts are offering new, specializedfacilitiesandservicesforRVcamping, jubensha parties, barbecues and picnics.

“Withtheseprograms, youngtouristsnolonger look to get 'distance',but are willing tofind new ways to experience their cities,”FengRao, head of Mafengwo Tourism Research Cen-ter, told People's Daily.Traveldoesn't mean you need to gofarawaytofindarestingplaceforyourheart.40 That's also the mission of the micro-tourism.
