1. a dark horse

a dark horse的意思是我们日常所说的“黑马;逆袭者;意外胜出的人”。dark horse最初只是作为赛马用语，因为“黑马”在以前被认为是一种鲜为人知的马，后来这种说法逐渐扩展到其他领域。

e.g. He is such a dark horse！We never thought he would get the first prize fi-nally. 他真是一匹黑马！我们从来没想过他最终会获得一等奖。

2. dark meat

dark meat不是“黑肉”的意思，而是“鸡腿肉”的意思。在美国，人们把鸡肉分成“白肉”和“黑肉”。鸡胸部分的肉称作white meat，而鸡腿上的肉就称作dark meat。

e.g. Most of the kids like eating dark meat. 大多数孩子喜欢吃鸡腿（肉）。

e.g. We ordered a dark meat in that restaurant. 我们在那家餐厅点了一份鸡腿肉。

3. paint in dark colors

paint in dark colors表示“把事情說得比事实差;贬损”的意思。相反，“夸大其词”可译为paint in bright colors。

e.g. They did paint in dark colors about his performance. 他们确实贬低他的表演了。

e.g. Why do you try to paint him in dark colors？ Did he offend you anywhere？ 你为何老是贬损他？他是不是得罪你了？

4. a shot in the dark

a shot in the dark表示“瞎猜;盲动;蛮干”的意思，相当于guess blindly。此外，还可以用stab来代替shot，即a stab in the dark。

e.g. If you don't know what the exact answer is， just take a shot in the dark. 如果你不知道正确答案是什么，就瞎猜一个吧。

e.g. It must be rigorous and can't be a shot in the dark. 这事一定要严谨，不能瞎猜。

5. be left in the dark

be left in the dark的字面意思是“被留在黑暗中”，引申为“被蒙在鼓里;一无所知”。

e.g. As one of her best friends， he is still left in the dark about her job. 作为她最好的朋友之一，他仍旧对她的职业一无所知。

e.g. As he was left in the dark about it， his responsibility is small. 由于他对此事一无所知，所以他的责任很小。

6. the dark side of sb/sth

the dark side of sb/sth意为“某人/某事不为人知的一面”，常含贬义。

e.g. If you knew the dark side of him， you wouldn't trust him so much. 如果你知道他不为人知的一面，你就不会如此信任他了。

7. the darkest hour is just before the dawn

该短语字面意思为“最黑暗的时间刚好在黎明之前”，引申为“最艰难的时刻往往在事情变好之前”，常用来表达对未来的希望或希冀。

e.g. The darkest hour is just before the dawn， so don't give up easily. 最艰难的时刻总是在事情变好之前，所以不要轻易就放弃了。
