[Abstract] Objective To detect the number of neutrophils in peripheral blood of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and healthy people to explore the clinical diagnosis and treatment value of neutrophils in assessing the activity and severity of UC disease. Methods A total of 110 patients with ulcerative colitis who were hospitalized from January 2019 to August 2020 in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University were enrolled, and 55 healthy people who received physical examination during the same period were enrolled as the normal control group. The neutrophil count (N),white blood cell count (WBC),albumin (ALB) and hemoglobin (HB) index levels of the first blood routine examination of patients in each group on admission were collected and compared. And the correlation between each index and C-reactive protein (CRP),erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR),Mayo score was analyzed. Results Compared with the control group and the remission UC,the N in the active UC group was significantly higher, and the HB and ALB levels were significantly lower (P<0.01). Compared with the mild UC patient group,N in the severe UC group was significantly increased,HB and ALB were significantly decreased (P<0.05),and there were no significant differences in the indicators between the moderate and severe groups (P>0.05). The N and WBC of UC patients were significantly positively correlated with CRP,ESR,and Mayo scores, while ALB and HB were negatively correlated with them (P<0.05). Compared with those of the patients not treated with infliximab, the N,CRP and ESR of patients treated with infliximab significantly reduced, and ALB significantly increased (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in WBC and HB between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion The level of neutrophils in peripheral blood is positively correlated with the activity and severity of UC,and its level can be reduced after infliximab treatment. Neutrophils can help evaluate the activity and severity of UC. It may become an indicator for assisting IBD diagnosis and treatment and predicting disease recurrence.
