3月初,中国驻旧金山总领事馆向美国华盛顿州塔科马市林肯中学校长埃尔文,转达了国家主席习近平致该校师生的新春祝福,希望两国学生继续加强交流,做中美人民友好的桥梁和纽带。
此前,在农历春节前夕,埃尔文校长向习近平主席致信,汇报该校近年来对华交流情况并致以新春祝福。
习近平主席与塔科马市的渊源要从1993年说起,当时他任福州市委书记,率团对华盛顿州进行考察,并促成福州市和塔科马市在1994年结成“姐妹城市”。从那时起,福州市和塔科马市在文化、教育方面的交流逐渐增多。2008年,林肯中学和福州教育学院附属中学结为“姐妹学校”。
2015年9月,习近平主席到访林肯中学,意在进一步加强与美国民众的互动。交流中,习近平主席鼓励孩子们“读万卷书,还要行万里路”。他欢迎大家多到中国走走看看,体验和感知中国,更全面、更深刻地了解中國、认识中国、喜爱中国。林肯中学校长埃尔文以关键词“阅读”和“旅行”解读习近平主席向该校学生讲话的精髓。此后,他更是用实际行动深入中国校园,了解中国教育,以期达成双方学校的精诚合作,促进中美教育人之间的深度交流。这其中,就包括林肯中学与重庆市育才中学在教育方面的友好交往。
据重庆市育才中学国际部负责人介绍,2017年至2019年,育才中学先后派出两位教师参与“华盛顿州孔子学院外派汉语教师志愿者”项目,前往林肯中学担任汉语教师。该项目为2010年重庆市教育委员会与美国华盛顿大学及西雅图学区合作开办。为进一步推进重庆市更多中小学参加教育国际交流合作,深化重庆市与西雅图市的友城交流,重庆市教委邀请美国华盛顿州教育代表团于2017年11月来访重庆。作为“对口”学校,林肯中学选择重庆市育才中学为参观学校,在双方进行深入的交流和进一步的磋商后签订了《合作谅解备忘录》。
这是埃尔文校长第一次来到重庆,他表示,中美两国的友谊需要年轻人去继承和发展,希望两所学校能在教师和学生交换项目上达成合作,促进双方的交流和进步。在此次交流活动中,他参观了育才中学的校园环境,深入课堂了解国画、民乐、书法、茶艺等中国传统文化,还到双福育才农场基地体验原生态的种植乐趣……育才中学的“行知文化”“生活教育”让这位外国校长印象深刻,开展的外国教师教授的特色课程让他赞不绝口,他感叹中式教育丰富多彩、博大精深,并对学校朝气蓬勃的学生给予了极高的评价。
2019年1月下旬,重庆市育才中学应邀回访美国林肯中学,深度交流双方办学理念,推动两校教育、文化领域的合作,并洽谈两校《合作谅解备忘录》中提出的学生定期互访交流项目的具体方案等。访问团还拜访了林肯中学所在的西雅图学区,并组织召开中美文化交流研讨会,经过与学区内外派教师的交流,双方一致同意全面加强与西雅图优质教学资源、教育人才合作。
2019年10月,美国华盛顿州教育代表团再次访问重庆市育才中学。此次参观交流,聚焦育才中学丰富多彩的文化、艺术课堂。
正如在2021年农历春节前夕,埃尔文校长向习近平主席致信中写道:“您希望两国学生进行交流,我们也持有相同想法。在中美两国经受全球疫情考验之际,现在是让学生发挥引领作用,成为两国相互支持榜样的最佳时机。”近年来,林肯中学与育才中学近百名师生参与交流,2020年受新冠肺炎疫情影响中断线下互访,但双方一直保持着线上交流。当疫情过去后,两校会继续外派教师项目,进一步推进定期开展师生交流互访活动的计划,持续加强与西雅图优质教学资源、教育人才合作。相信在友好合作的大背景下,两校乃至两个学区间的文化交流之路将愈加宽广、繁荣。

In early March, the Consulate-General of China in San Francisco conveyed President Xi Jinping's New Year greetings for the teachers and students of Lincoln Middle School of Tacoma, Washington State, US to Principal Erwin, and hoped that the students of two countries could reinforce communication and act as a friendly bridge and link between the two peoples.
Prior to that, Principal Erwin wrote to President Xi Jinping on Lunar New Year's Eve to report on the communication between the school and China in the recent years along with his New Year greetings.
President Xi Jinping's stories with Tacoma date back to 1993. When working as the Party secretary of CPC Fuzhou Committee, he once led a delegation to visit Washington State and twinned Fuzhou with Tacoma as “sister cities” in 1994. Since then, communication mounted in cultural and educational aspects between the two cities. In 2008, Lincoln Middle School twinned with the Affiliated High School of Fuzhou Institute of Education.
In September 2015, President Xi Jinping paid a visit to Lincoln Middle School to further reinforce the interaction with the American people. During the communication, he encouraged the students to "travel ten thousand miles apart from reading ten thousand books". Moreover, he welcomed everyone there to visit China to experience and feel the country and to understand, get to know and appreciate it in an all-around and in-depth manner. Principal Erwin of Lincoln Middle School used the keywords of "reading" and "traveling" to explain the essence of Xi's speech to the students. After that, he also visited Chinese campuses to learn about Chinese education with practical actions in a bid to attain sincere partnerships between schools on both sides and promote the in-depth exchanges between Chinese and American educators, including friendly exchanges between Lincoln Middle School and Chongqing Yucai High School.
According to the director of International Department of Chongqing Yucai High School, the school sent two teachers to teach Chinese in Lincoln Middle School in a row from 2017 to 2019 and to participate in the "Washington State Confucius Institute Chinese Teacher Volunteers" project, a joint project among Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, University of Washington and Seattle School District initiated in 2010. To advance more primary and secondary schools in Chongqing to participate in the international education communication and cooperation, and deepen the friendly city communication between Chongqing and Seattle, Chongqing Municipal Education Commission invited the education delegation of Washington State, US to visit Chongqing in November, 2017. As the twinned-up school, Lincoln Middle School chose Chongqing Yucai High School for the visit and signed the Memorandum of Understanding after in-depth exchange of views and further negotiations.
During Principal Erwin's first visit to Chongqing, he suggested that the friendship between the Chinese and American people requires the inheritance and development of the youth and wished that the schools can unfold cooperation on the exchange project of teachers and students to foster the communication and progress of both sides. In the exchange, Principal Erwin visited the school campus and attended classes to learn traditional Chinese culture, such as Chinese traditional painting, folk music, tea art, etc and experienced the simple fun of planting in Shuangfu Yucai Farm Base... With Yucai High School's "culture of knowledge and practice" and "life education" leaving a deep impression on the foreign principal, he applauded the specialized courses taught by foreign teachers, commended the diverse and profound Chinese-style education and spoke quite highly of the motivated students of the school.
In late January, 2019, Chongqing Yucai High School paid a return visit to Lincoln Middle School, US at its invitation, exchanged the educational philosophy of both sides deeply, facilitated the educational and cultural cooperation between the two schools and discussed the specific plans of regular student exchanges included in the Memorandum of Understanding. This time, the delegation also visited Seattle School District, where Lincoln Middle School is located, and organized the Seminar on China-US Cultural Exchange. After communicating with expatriate teachers in the district, the all-around cooperation enhancement with Seattle on high-quality teaching resources and education talents was agreed by both sides unanimously.
In October 2019, the education delegation of Washington State, US visited Chongqing Yucai High School again with the focus on the enriched cultural and art classes of Yucai High School.
Just like Principal Erwin wrote to President Xi Jinping on Lunar New Year's Eve of 2021, "As we share your hope for student exchanges between our countries, it's now the best timing for students to spearhead and exemplify mutual support for each other when China and US are put to the tests of the global pandemic". In the recent years, nearly 100 teachers and students have been maintaining the communication online despite interrupted offline visits due to COVID-19 in 2020. After the pandemic comes to an end, both schools will carry on the expatriate teacher project, further boost the plan of regular exchange of teachers and students, and further strengthen cooperation with Seattle on high-quality teaching resources and education talents. It is believed that the path of cultural exchange will be broadened and bustled between the two schools and even the two school districts under the context of the amity and cooperation.
