Deep in the beautiful scenery of Nanshan, under the Wenfeng pagoda and at the end of the Huangjue ancient road, there is a cloister building with a combination of eastern and western style. It looks half covered on the lush hillside if you see it from a distance. It is the former site of the German embassy.

The building covers an area of about 100 square meters, with a construction area of 300 square meters and an overall height of 13 meters. It is a two-story building in brick, wood and stone structure with an attic, hip roof, covered with small grey tiles and supported by arches under the eaves. The second and third floors are built with brick walls. The ground floor is made of 6 rooms built with stone-strip walls and stone-slab floor while the attic has 5 rooms. The second and third floors are made of wood floors. Dormer-windows and floor-to-floor glass windows make the whole building well lighted. Surrounded by lush woods, the building faces the Wenfeng Pagoda and has Xiangjiapo in the back. It is still well preserved despite of its decades of history.

From 1938 to 1941, the national government of the Republic of China moved its capital to Chongqing, and the German embassy in China moved to the city accordingly. The German consular affairs were immediately handed over to the embassy. In August 1938, the Chargé d'affaires of German to China and his secretary arrived in Chongqing to set up the embassy. The German embassy considered relocation because of the heavy bombing of Chongqing by Japanese planes. After negotiations, they rented the residence of German doctor P. Assmy and built the German embassy upon it. Now, by the side of the building stands a well-preserved tombstone (Dr P. Assmy 1869~1935) that records the birth and death of the German doctor.

In July 1941, Germany officially recognized the puppet regime of Wang Jingwei in Nanjing and the National Government of the Republic of China severed diplomatic ties with Germany. The German embassy was closed. In December 1942 after the Pacific War broke out, the National Government officially declared war on Japan and accordingly on Germany and Italy. The German embassy in Chongqing was also officially closed.

On January 10, 1991, this small building was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Nan 'an District of Chongqing.
