The great stone wall of Kumbhalgarh snakes along the Arāvalli Range for over 20 miles. From the fort’s hilltop location elevation of 3 500 feet above sea level, the sand dunes of the Thar Desert are visible far to the west. Over 300 Hindu and Jain temples lie behind the massive 5 meter thick frontal walls. The upper level is accessed through seven monumental gateways. Steeped in religious legends and folklore, this 15th Century monument has a very special significance beyond its architecture to the people of India.
