These sample interview questions come direct from the tutors who conduct the interviews. We hope theyll make you think, and help you understand why we ask the questions that we do.
Geography
Interviewer: Lorraine Wild, St Hildas College
If I were to visit the area where you live, what would I be interested in?
The question gives candidates an opportunity to apply concepts from their A level geography course to their home area. They might discuss urban planning and regeneration, or issues of environmental management. The question probes (探究) whether they are able to apply ‘geographical thinkingto the everyday landscapes around them. It reveals the extent to which they have a curiosity about the world around them. By asking specifically about their home area the question eliminates (消除) any advantage gained by those who are more widely travelled and have more experience of a variety of geographical contexts.
Music
Interviewer: Dan Grimley, Merton College
If you could invent a new musical instrument, what kind of sound would it make?
This question is really very open-ended, and Im interested in answers which demonstrate a critical imagination at work—what kinds of sounds do instruments/voices make now, and how might these be imaginatively extended/developed? Are there new ways of producing sound (digital media) which have transformed the way we listen or understand sound? Is the idea of an‘instrument somehow outdated these days, and can we imagine more mixed ways of generating/experiencing musical sound? Its by no means limited to classical music — Id welcome answers which deal with musical styles and tastes of all kinds (and which are produced/consumed in all places).
21. The first interviewer asks about the candidates home area rather than other places to _________.
A. avoid being unfair to all candidates
B. encourage them to develop their hometown
C. express interest in their home country
D. test students talent in geography
22. What kind of answers does the second interviewer expect?
A. They have made plans to invent a new instrument.
B. They talk about styles of classic music as many as possible.
C. They think of instruments that have already disappeared.
D. They display their imagination to mix different musical styles.
23. From the second interview question, you find the university prefers to admit students who ________.
A. gain a mix of experience in different areas of subjects
B. take a critical view to explore new ideas in the chosen subject
C. have a good memory of concepts from their A level courses
D. show a talent for making the most of interviews

Is it your dream to fly and to work in space? Do you want to be a NASA astronaut? Like many jobs, the first thing would be to fill out the application. A record-breaking 18,300 people filled out applications recently when NASA announced it was filling its 2017 Astronaut Candidate program. But out of those 18,300 applicants, just eight to 14 will be hired by the U.S. space agency.
It will take 18 months to decide who will be in the new class of astronauts. NASA will review all of the files, which will later go to its current team of astronauts, to make sure they meet the basic qualifications.
The first requirement is the applicants must be U.S. citizens. They need a college degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. They also need at least three years of experience in a similar field or at least 1,000 hours as a jet airline pilot.
There are requirements to pass a physical test. And then there are personality tests as well. What kinds of personality qualities is NASA looking for in an astronaut? NASAs Selection Manager Anne Roemer said, “I think leadership, teamwork, the ability to not only work on a team, lead a team, but also follow, be a follower on a team. Communication certainly plays a role, so its some pretty common skills that I think translate into even other professions.”
About 120 applicants will be invited to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, for a first round of interviews, about half of whom will go back for a second round. Once selected, they must complete two years of training in everything about spaceflight—things like learning about all the systems used by NASA, walking in space and Russian language training. Until the U.S. has a working vehicle to launch into space, NASA still depends on Russia to get astronauts into space.
24. What is the percentage of employment among the applicants?
A. About half of them.
B. About 8 to 14.
C. About 120 applicants.
D. Less than 0.08 percent.
25. Which do you think is the most important personality quality according to NASAs Selection Manager?
A. Devotion.
B. Team spirit.
C. Communication.
D. Perseverance.
26. Which is NOT the basic requirement the applicants have to meet?
A. A college degree in required areas.
B. Related experience.
C. Speaking Russian fluently.
D. Passing physical and personality tests.
27. Which may be the best title for this text?
A. What it takes to be an astronaut.
B. What an astronaut should train in.
C. NASA welcomes its most applicants ever.
D. NASA 2017 Astronaut Candidate program.

You can fake a smile, but your phone knows the truth. Depression can be detected by tracking the number of minutes you use the phone and your daily geographical locations, reports a small Northwestern Medicine study.
The more time you spend using your phone, the more likely you are depressed. The average daily usage for depressed people was about 68 minutes, while for non-depressed people it was about 17 minutes. Spending most of your time at home or in fewer locations was also linked to depression, as was having a less regular day-to-day schedule, leaving your house and going to work at different times each day, for example.
Phones can provide data secretly and with no effort on the part of the user. The smartphone data was more reliable in detecting depression than asking people how happy or sad they were each day. The data showing depressed people tended not to go many places reflects the loss of motivation. When people are depressed, they dont have the motivation or energy to go out and do things.
The research found people who spent the most time on their phones were surfing the web or playing games, rather than talking to friends. People are likely, when on their phones, to avoid thinking about things that are troubling, painful feelings or difficult relationships. Dr David Mohr, one of the studys authors, explained, “its an avoidance behavior we see in depression.”
They analyzed the GPS locations and phone usage for 20 women and eight men with an average age of 29 over two weeks.
The goal of the research is to passively detect depression and different levels of emotional states related to depression. The technology could be used to monitor people who are at risk of depression. The researchers say future research will look at whether getting people to change those behaviors linked to depression improves their mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
28. According to this study, which is NOT the factor that linked to depression?
A. Time spent using the phone.
B. Changes to normal schedules.
C. Talking to friends on the phone.
D. Always staying in particular locations.
29. What does this study contribute to the depression research?
A. Smartphone data use increases the accuracy of research.
B. It secretly spies on participants through their phones.
C. Phone interviews prove to be more objective.
D. It identifies how participants were using their phones.
30. What do depressed people mostly avoid doing on their phones?
A. Playing mobile games with best friends forever.
B. Planning their journey outside of where they live.
C. Using more of their cameras than other features.
D. Seeking advice on how to deal with demanding bosses.
31. The researchers say further study is needed in _________.
A. behavior changes
B. depressive symptoms
C. phone detection
D. standardized questionnaire

Dear Parents/Carers,
It has been 2 weeks since I started as Headteacher at St. Chads so I thought it would be a good time to write to you and let you know what I have found at the school.
I have great pleasure in telling you that this is a warm, welcoming community where our values are very much in evidence to me on a daily basis. I have also had the pleasure of meeting future members of St. Chads with a number of our feeder primary schools taking part in tremendous activities.
It was also World Book Day and our pupils and staff have spent time discussing what reading means in our world today. All pupils were given a ?1 book token to spend in their local bookstore which I know you will encourage your child to use. Assessment Week 3 has also taken place for all pupils. I am looking forward to seeing the improvements in academic achievement.

Food waste is a big problem. When you toss (扔) a 41 apple, youre not just 42 the food, but all the resources 43 went into producing it.
Water plays a major role in food production, and 44 , food waste translates to a huge amount of water wastage. All foods have a water footprint, the direct and indirect water that goes into producing a certain food— 45 some footprints are larger than others. In general, meats tend to need the most water for production, 46
because of the amount of food the animal needs. So for example, the water footprint of beef 47
water thats used to grow the animals feed and to 48 the farm, as well as drinking water for the animal. Also, larger animals arent as efficient
49 meat production as smaller animals like chickens or turkeys, and the bigger beasts 50
have a larger water footprint. Consider this: The water footprint of beef 51 1,800 gallons per pound, 52 a chickens water footprint is roughly 519 gallons per pound.
Food waste has other environmental 53 , too. Rotting food that 54 its way into landfills releases methane (甲烷), which is more 55 to the environment than carbon dioxide.
All is not lost, however. 56 are numerous efforts underway to cut food loss at every level. Even simple changes can have big effects. A few years ago, college cafeterias 57
the U.S. began to go trayless. It forced students to think about 58 they really wanted to eat. The seemingly simple 59 helped reduce food waste by 25 to 30 percent in some colleges.
60 , change at any level—whether its as a supplier, retailer or consumer—will help ease the impact of food waste on natural resources.
