There is an unusual holiday in the US that falls on the fourth Thursday of April every year. It is very different from Christmas, Thanksgiving, or other wellknown holidays. It is called Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
This holiday is meant to be educational as well as fun. The idea is simple, and the name says it all. It is a day for working parents to take their children to work for one day and show them what they do all day.
It is a nonprofit1 educational program in the United States, Canada and Australia. In the Canadian province of Ontario, it occurs on the 1st Wednesday of November. In Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, Australia, it occurs on January 5th, just after Christmas Break.
It was created in New York in the summer of 1992 by the Ms. Foundation2 for Women and its president, Marie C. Wilson, the Womens foundation treasurer3, Ms. Daren Ball, and with support from foundation founder Gloria Steinem. The first celebration4 took place on April 22nd, 1993.
Although this holiday doesnt seem very complex5, it has meaningful6 purposes. There are many good reasons why a child should know what his or her parents do at work. For one thing, it is hard for children to understand the life of an adult when all they know is school. So this holiday helps children learn what it means to have a job. It also helps them learn about the differences and similarities7 between their world and the grownup world. When young people know more about their parents lives, they can form stronger parentchild relationships8. This alone is worth a day of celebration.
