“Where is the university?”This is a question that many visitors to Cambridge ask.But no one can give them a clear answer,for there is no wall to be found around the university.The university is the city.You can find classroom buildings,libraries,museums and offices of the university all over the city.And most of its members are the students and teachers of the thirty-one colleges.

Cambridge was already a developing town long before the first students and teachers arrived 800 years ago.It grew up by the river Granta,and the river was once called the Cam.A bridge was built over the river as early as 875.So the town got its name“Cambridge”.

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries,more and more land was used for college buildings. The town grew much faster in the nineteenth century after the opening of the railway in 1845. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and now it has a population of over 100,000.Many young students in other countries hope to study at Cambridge.Thousands of people from all over the world come to visit the university town.It has become a famous place all around the world.

“剑桥大学在哪里？”这个一个很多去剑桥的游客都会问的问题。但是没有人能给出一个清楚的答案，因为剑桥大学没有围墙。这个大学就是一座城市。你能在市内随处可见大学的教学楼、图书馆、博物馆和办公室，这些地方的大部分人是这31个学院的学生和老师。

800年前，首批学生和教师来到剑桥之前，剑桥已经是一个蓬勃发展的城镇了。剑桥这个城镇是在格兰塔河畔发展起来，而这条河曾经叫作“剑河”（音译，又作康河，徐志摩《再别康桥》中康桥即为剑桥）。早在875年，剑河上就修了一座桥，所以这个城镇才得名——剑桥。

在14世纪和15世纪，越来越多的土地用于剑桥大学的建筑。1845年，铁路开建，剑桥的发展速度愈发加快。1951年，剑桥升级为市，现在有10万多人口。很多外国的年轻学生都希望到剑桥学习。全球各地成千上万的人来参观这座大学城，剑桥已经成为了世界上一个著名的地方。
