Yesterday my grandfather told me about his early days. When he left school at the age of 20, he found a job in a post office. He worked hard in the post office. Soon he had more money than his friends because of his hard work. It seemed that he would have a bright future.
When he was 25 years old, however, he began to dislike his job. He wanted a more exciting one, so he left the post office. Two months later he found a new job in a big company. Workers in this company usually traveled a lot. At first he really enjoyed the traveling. But after a year, he began to hate it. He had to move around and he was always in a car or on a train. The worst thing was that he couldnt make any new friends. Even so, his boss was not satisfied with him. Two years later he left the company.
He was poor at that time so he sold his house. He had to accept a part-time job in a bookshop. He was surprised to find that he loved it! He made new friends every day and he enjoyed reading books. Three years later, he married the shop owners daughter. Soon they had their first child. In the next ten years, they had another three children and four more bookshops! He became very rich indeed.

One afternoon, Tim, my son, came home from school with a puzzled look on his face. I asked him what was the matter and he said, “Are the people the same even though their skin (皮肤) colors are different?” I thought for a moment, and then said, “Ill explain.” I put apples of different colors on the table: first a red apple, then a green apple and at last a yellow apple. I looked at Tim.
“Tim, people are just like apples. They come in all different colors and shapes. See, some of the apples have been bruised(擦伤). On the outside, they may not even look as delicious as the others.” As I was talking, Tim was checking each apple carefully.
Then, I took each of the apples and peeled them, putting them back on the table, but in a different place.
“OK, Tim, tell me which one is the red apple, the green apple and the yellow apple.”
Tim said, “I cant. They all look the same now.”
“Now taste each of them. See if that helps you find out which one is which.”

All living things on the earth need other living things to live. Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind. Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain (食物链). Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears.
All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are “factories”. They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air.
Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the suns energy (能量) after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits and so on. We also eat meat and drink milk. But humans often break up the food chains. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them cannot be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases.
Each form of life is linked to all others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.

I was very disappointed (失望) not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The notice in the newspaper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Since I work from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unluckily, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.
Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip. So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I knew I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town. By Friday I decided to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt the concert would be worth hearing. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, I quickly found, was that they had already sold all the tickets.
