第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Dear students,

Your bright smiles and happy hearts confirm how beautiful life is. The fact that you come to school everyday and hop around with your bouncing(跳跃) backpacks while screaming “Hello!” to every single teacher you see encourages me to bounce into class and teach. It is the simple smiles, the carefully folded and cut origami(折纸), the little doodles(涂鸦) you draw next to your homework, and the love you show for all of your teachers that has taught me to slow down. I respect you for waking up at the crack of dawn and eagerly await for the school gate to open and to pile in lines for breakfast. I admire you for your quickness in speech and your even quicker moving of your hands into the air to answer a question.

Although I will never be a Dayao Local, I feel that over these two months I have begun to feel at home. You have made me feel at home. Truly, Mingde is my home. I dont know if you know this but I actually live in half of a classroom. I couldnt have had it any other way. I am in my office from 7 am to 11 pm at night figuring out how to understand you. It is incredible that you are learning three languages at the same time.

It is also humbling(谦逊的) when you raise your hand during afternoon self study to ask if I can help you with your geometry homework. I stare at the thick written page and cannot answer. The Chinese is too hard for me to understand on the spot. But, like you, I dont give up and you patiently wait for me to slowly read the problems and work out in my head why the question is even asking. I am the luckiest person in the world to have 1500 students and teachers teaching me how to be a better person every day.

Best wishes,

Miss K.

Last August, I traveled with a group of volunteers to Tres de Mayo, a small community near Tela, Honduras to help renovate(整修) a community centre. During my stay there, I learned many things and I also had plenty of opportunity to interact and work with local children, and I often could not help but think about the hardships they faced day to day, all factors considered to place children atrisk for problems later in life.

One young boy in particular, Javier,16, stood out for me. Javiers father had left a year earlier for the U.S., and the family had not heard from him since. This put his mother in a difficult position, stay in Tres de Mayo with no job and no source of income. In the end she decided to move to another province to find work. Javier with his little brother had to stay to live with their grandfather in a small house. Many of the children we met in Tres de Mayo were in similar situations.

As our last day approached, I remember the look in Javiers eyes, as they welled up with tears when we told him we were leaving. One of the volunteers held him close, but it did little to console him. He had already experienced so much loss, his father abandoning him, his mother leaving to find work, and it was hard to realize that our departure was adding to the list.

As I looked beyond Javier, I could see the many men and women whom Javier looked up to, depended on, and gathered strength from. I did know that without parents to raise him, he was not left alone. Instead, the adults in the community took responsibility for the care of their collective young.

B. The united effort from the whole global village.endprint

Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live, parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or homeschooling.

Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that a parent can take in order to increase their childs skills and overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a childs brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.

Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a childs mental and physical health. It is recommended that parents teach their children two languages at once. Research suggests that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. Other studies state that three to four years of age is the perfect time. Clearly, any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child.

The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have an adequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want. The more comfortable they get, the easier the process will be.

I was waiting to cross on a typically busy New York City day when a woman approached from my right, pushing a baby stroller. I watched her silently coo(哄) over her adorable child. Oh, no, shes going to get hit. Yet I paused for five seconds before reaching out to her. In my mind, I could see it all: the yellow taxi smashing into them, the woman losing hold of the stroller…

“What are you doing?” a man said. His voice brought me back to reality: the man grabbed the womans arm and dragged her back greatly just in time to avoid the speeding taxi. The woman was shocked but had been unaware of her near death. The man glared at her, eyes narrowed in disapproval. Was he relieved that he had stopped them in time? Was he annoyed that the woman seemed so absentminded? She moved away and did not even thank him.

I saw this man become a hero for the day; he saved two lives. I didnt pay attention to the man as he walked away from that fated spot. Instead, I stared at the woman and child. Now that little boy can grow up. Hell never know the blow that life almost gave him. His mother may tell him at some point, “Oh, you know, we almost got hit by a car once,” but what are the chances he would actually care, since he was alive? I, however, the silent stranger who just stood there, who saw everything and did nothing. Why didnt I do anything immediately? Why did I wait for five seconds? … I was afraid. Afraid that I could have been wrong about my prediction: What if she got annoyed by my action? What if I looked like a fool?

Later, I thought about our society, and the way I have been raised. Around the subway, there were empty seats between people, but they chose to stand for 15 minutes rather than sit next to strangers. Kids grow up with the warning that if they talk to strangers, they will end up getting kidnapped and never be seen again.endprint
