The problem of food safety has been becoming worse and worse nowadays.

Last month， one of my classmates came back from supermarket with a large bag of food. Because of having found a new style of tinned food in the food store， she was very glad. Several other roommates were invited to enjoy it. Unfortunately， after finishing the food， all of my three friends felt sick had stomachaches， their faces having become paler and paler. Due to sensitivity to that kind of tinned food， I escaped that suffer. At that time， my mind went blank. I dialed the emergency number with my trembling hand， therefore they were quickly sent to hospital. The doctor said they were lucky to be out of danger because they did not eat too much of that rotten fish and were hospitalized on time.

This is the matter that happened around me which made me realize the seriousness of the food safety problem.

Taiwan on Tuesday fined a leading supplier more than $1.6 million for selling hundreds of tons of “gutter oil（地沟油）” and setting off a food safety scare that spread from the island to Hong Kong and Macau.

Chang Guann Company， the cooking oil company involved in the scandal（丑闻）， got the huge fine as well as an order from the authority to pull all of its oil products from store shelves， even product that had passed food safety tests. The boss of the company apologized to the general public by kneeling down twice， which didnt stop the scare from getting worse.

The scandal has damaged the reputation of more than 1，000 companies and severely damaged the image of Taiwanese food overseas. Hundreds of tons of mooncakes， pineapple cakes， bread， instant noodles and Chinese steamed buns and dumplings have been removed from shelves. Lots of restaurants have apologized to customers for having unknowingly used the gutter oil. No one is able to estimate how big the losses will be.
