Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldnt take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff (员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Promise?” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Glorias new friend with “her” ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream wont last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you,” but Im sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏). Finally, there was only one family between the ticket office and us. This family made a big impression on me.
There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didnt have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children talked excitedly about the clowns. It was clearly a very important day out for them. The father and mother seemed happy as they could be.
The ticket lady asked how many tickets the father wanted. He answered proudly, “Please let me buy eight childrens tickets and two adults tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady told him the price. The mans wife lowered her head. There was no longer a smile on the mans face. He asked quietly, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady told him the price again. The man obviously (明显地) didnt have enough money. But how could he tell his kids the bad news?
Seeing what was happening, my dad took a $ 20 note from his pocket and dropped it on the ground. (We were not rich ourselves at all!) He then tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, you dropped this.”
The man understood my father was helping him. He picked up the money, looked straight into my dads eyes, and replied in tears, “Thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Although we did not go to the circus that night, we didnt go without.

How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun was probably the worlds first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos live. There, its dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun fully, if you dont have a clock that shows time, you still know that when the sun shines, its day, and when its dark, its night. The sun can not only tell you whether its day or night but also its morning, noon, or afternoon. When the sun is almost directly overhead, its noon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every twenty-four hours.
Seaman on a ship tells time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over the sand will take another hour to go back again.
