should意为“应该”，和其他情态动词一样，没有人称和数的变化，表示说话人对某一动作或状态的态度。在句中不能单独作谓语，必须和动词原形连用，合成谓语。

一、should的基本用法

1.should表示劝告、建议，认为某人“应该；应当”做某事，或表示“有责任和义务”做某事。如：

You should wait a little more.你应该再多等一会儿。

2.should表示“要求；命令”，此时与had better(最好),must(必须)意义相近，但从should→had better→must，在语气上逐渐加强。试比较：

You should read English in the morning.早上你应该读英语。

You had better read English in the morning.早上你最好读英语。

You must read English in the morning.早上你必须读英语。

3.should还可表示可能性或期望。如：

I think your uncle should come there now.我想你叔叔现在可能到那儿了。

二、shou ld的句式转换

1.should的否定形式是在should后面加上not，即：should not，可缩写成shouldn’t。如：

W e should not tell lies.我们不应该说谎话。

2.should的一般疑问句是把should移置主语之前，句中有some类的词语时要改为any类的词语。如：

Should he go to see a doctor at once?他应该立即去看医生吗？

对一般疑问句作简略回答时，肯定回答为：Yes,主语+should；否定回答为：No,主语+shouldn’t。如：

—Should we do more exercise?我们应该多做运动吗？

—Yes,you should.是的，你们应该（多做运动）。

/No,you shouldn’t.不，你们不应该（多做运动）。

3.should的特殊疑问句是由“特殊疑问词+一般疑问句”构成的。如：

What should I do?我该怎么办呢？

三、shou ld的特殊用法

1.should用于第一人称的疑问句中表示征求别人的意见。如：

What should I do next?下一步我该怎么办？

2.should表示“建议或劝告”时与ought to同义，可以互换使用。如：You should finish the work on time.

=You ought to finish the work on time.你应当准时完成这项工作。

3.should用作助动词，主要用于过去将来时中，只能用于第一人称。如：

Yesterday I wrote to my father to tell him that I should go to Hang⁃zhou for vacation the next month.昨天我写信给我爸爸告诉他下个月我要去杭州度假。

4.should表示说话人的感情，如惊奇、愤怒、失望等，多见于以why，who，how，what等开头的特殊疑问句中。如：

Why should I invite them?为什么我要邀请他们呢？

How should I know?我怎么会知道？
