A new technological challenge in robotics should be on how to store and retrieve knowledge and manipulate intelligence, for autonomous services for humans. To deal with this challenge, Intelligence Technology(InT) should be applied to robots for providing such services. InT is intelligence operating technology, which is the application of machines and agents to perceive and process data and information for knowledge-based reasoning and utilize their own reasoning to execute an appropriate action. In this regard, InT is the crux in Robot Technology (RT) which leads to build “Robots That Think”.
This talk presents the Robot Technology based on intelligence Operating Architecture(iOA) for realizing intelligent robots in conjunction with the concept of intelligence super-agent(iSA). This talk also introduces the related research outcomes for building thinking robots based on iOA, carried out in the Robot Intelligence Technology Lab. at KAIST in recent years. These research outcomes include the mechanism of thought for robots. On-line multi-objective evolutionary navigation for humanoid robots, the fuzzy integral-based gaze control for humanoid robots for navigation and HRI, implementation of long term memory for carrying out a task, etc. Moreover, UDREAM(User-centered Development of Robots Enacted through Agent-based Modularization) is also introduced as a framework for realizing iSA that can be employed as avirtual brain of robos. With these outcomes, it is expected that RT will overcome the technological challenge to support humans with autonomous services.
