二、完形填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)

Have you ever been tempted to cut a corner or to take the easiest route, though you know it may not necessarily be the best one? Or have you ever made a 16 because it was quick and simple, knowing that it might come back to 17 you later?

I appreciate a parable Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard who told about the 18 of taking the easy route. It is a story about a 19 duck. Though life was difficult at times, the beautiful creature loved the boundless heavens and the endless stretches of wilderness. 20 about treetops and towns, the duck symbolized to its tame (家养的) counterparts, who could not 21, the epitome (化身) of freedom.

One evening during fall migration, he 22 to light in a barnyard where a farmer was feeding his ducks. The beautiful creature ate the 23 the farmer sprinkled about and liked it so much that he stayed the night in a bed of 24 straw. He ate the ducks corn again the next day. And the next. And the next...

When 25 came, he heard his old companions flying overhead and an almost forgotten yearning awoke deep 26 him. The duck had reduced his instinct for freedom over the 27winter. Although now he longed to 28 his comrades in the sky, he had grown fat and unable to fly. The wild duck had become a 29 duck.

三、阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,满分30分)

For more than l,000 years, we in Bulgaria have celebrated our national holiday on March lst called Baba Marta, Grandma March. Mart in Bulgarian is the name for the month of March.

Bulgarians wear a small special ornament (装饰物) made of red and white yarn on this day, called Martenitsa. Some like to wear the Martenitsa around their wrists. Sometimes people tie it to the branch of a tree or bush to leave there. You can find the Martenitsas hanging there in the branches as you walk outside.

The belief is that if you wear the Martenitsa, Baba Marta will help you, and spring will come more quickly.

The tradition comes from the following legend:

Khan Asparuh, the first Bulgarian king, had a sister called Huba. She was held captive in another kingdom. Asparuh sent a message to his sister that he had found a land where they could settle down south of the Danube River, a place that nowadays is Bulgaria.

When Huba got the good news, she managed to run away. She rode on horseback without stopping until she reached the Danube River. She couldnt find a ford to pass across. So then she tied a thread of white yarn to one of the legs of a falcon (猎鹰) sent by her brother and let him fly up into the air, holding the other end of the thin thread in her hands.

The falcon flew away and just when he found a place, an arrow shot by an enemy pierced the falcon, and he fell to the ground dead. The yarn became red from his blood. Huba followed the thread she was holding and so she found the way to cross the great river and reach the country where her brother Asparuh had made his new home.endprint

That day was March lst, the new year in the tradition of those times. They called the white and red threads of yarn after the name of the month March, and named it Martenitsa.

The Martenitsa became a symbol of peace and love, health and happiness. The white color symbolizes purity and honesty in relationships, and the red color means life, passion, and cordiality in friendship and mutual love.

Women may appear to be more prevalent on social networks, but when it comes to using them for business purposes men have the upper hand. Men are “savvier” when it comes to making professional connections in cyberspace, according to a study.

Linkedin, the online network for professionals, analyzed the connection data of its 100 million members, both male and female. They found that men made more business connections than women.

Nicole Williams, LinkedIns Connection Director, said that the results may be due to women being more reluctant to network online. “Having the right connections can make a difference when it comes to sealing a deal or landing a new client,” she said. “Women can sometimes shy away from networking because they associate it with chatting or doling out business cards, when in reality, its about building relationships before you actually need them. Networking in person can be intimidating (威胁的), so women should look at a site like LinkedIn as a place they can go to cultivate their networking skills.”

There were also a few surprises when it came to industries in which women were proven to be more “savvy” than men. One of these was the cosmetics industry, which saw male employees triumphing over their female counterparts when it came to networking. However, women ruled the roost in areas such as the agriculture industry.endprint
