Mobile branches have been driving round in Scotland for nearly 70 years, but the latest version is helping to introduce remote communities to the age of banking on the Internet. Once a week the van pulls into a village like Moffat, in the Borders, for just a couple of hours, allowing customers to cash a cheque, perhaps, or 1)park their money.
Now, up to now, when customers have turned up at a van like this, the staff have actually had to make a telephone call to call up the bank before they can give money out. These new vans, though, carry new technology which links them directly to the network and allows them to offer a much better standard of service.
Well, coming inside the new van here, the first thing youve got over here is an iPad. Customers can log on here very quickly and get simple and easy access to their accounts. Or, over here, staff can use this computer to actually log on for you. Also, for those who arent familiar with banking Apps, staff can show you exactly how to use one. That, of course, is the other form of mobile banking.
Critics say the new vans are a tool to 2)disguise the fact that 3)RBS is closing more high-street branches. The bank denies that, saying the vans can now reach more customers and give them a more personal service.
