BCFTCS Holidays is a small to medium size tour operator which has been maintaining a market share (approx 3%) with a total capacity of 500,000 but the overall market is now much more competitive. For this years launch the Board of Directors require from the Marketing Management details of the marketing plan prior to funding approval being given. UK inflation is 3.0%, the price of most products, fuels and foods have raised, which add more cost to consumer expenditure; however the minimum wages has increased year by year, therefore economy in the UK will not be influenced much by inflation; anticipated market growth is 5%, so they are both steady. Interest rates are 5.25%, which is a little bit high. People may not spend or borrow too much money from bank or choose an expensive holiday package; in recent years the Euro has gained in strength so the exchange rate between the Euro and the Pound sterling is 1.4-1.0, so it costs more money to travel in Europe than ever before. These are negative factors that may influence UK travellers when choosing a destination for a short haul holiday.
1.destination and segment of the market to be targeted
The Marketing Management team has decided that the destination will be Lanzarote in Spain. “Lanzarote is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August” (http://www.discoverlanzarote.com/).
Obviously, the segments of the market to be targeted are families and couples. “The popularity of package holidays to Lanzarote has presented families and couples with a brace of modern resorts – most facing immaculate pale sandy beaches, backed by the ochre coloured mountains” (http://www.mytravel.com/). Lanzarote has a very good climate because of its geographic location close to Africa. It attracts lots of travellers from countries which have bad weather for “winter sun” holidays especially UK tourists. “People will see plenty of chances to enjoy a spot of water sports – whether windsurfing, scuba diving or sport fishing. Family holidays to Lanzarote offer an explosive combination of attractions.” (http://www.mytravel.com/) .
2.UK departure airport
Transport and tourism are synonymous. For international tourism, airlines are the principal mode of travel. Manchester Airport is about 20 minutes drive from central Manchester and is accessed from the M56 motorway with a dedicated link road at junction 5. National Express runs coaches from all over the UK to terminals one and two. Trains stop at Manchester Airport station and Manchester Piccadilly, the main station, from many stations in northern England and the Midlands. Gatwick airport is linked to the M23 motorway. The Gatwick Express train is the best-known rail service which runs to London Victoria Station. There is also a Thameslink service runs to London Kings Cross as well as to other London Stations.
3.Accommodation
Accommodation for the target travellers can be in hotels and apartments. “The most popular type of accommodation for family travellers was hotels (full- or half-board), followed by all-inclusive hotels and rented accommodation.” (http://academic.mintel.com/ - Family Holidays – Spain) Compared to youth groups, family travellers have a steady income and a certain amount of savings in the bank. When the holiday has been planned, they have a condition where they are able to spend more money to ensure good accommodation in which to stay. According to this, the company should give holidaymakers the chance to holiday in quality accommodation with high-quality food, perfect location, great surroundings, good facilities, and various activities. With different family situations (numbers of people) or diverse income, there are plenty of hotels and apartments to choose from. For instance, Hotel Natura Palace is located on the seafront promenade; its perfect location is only 3km from the resort centre. The hotel offers nice, quality food, “there is plenty to keep you active, such as a game of billiards or minigolf, or check out the table tennis, tennis courts, gym and diving school facilities.” (Anon, Thomson Destinations) Certainly, family holidays will never ignore activities for children. In this hotel, “there is childrens pool and play area, and the hotel runs a childrens club and disco for 4-12 year olds” (Anon, Thomson Destinations) The rate is from 305 pounds for 3 nights and is based on 2 or 3 beds in the room. Obviously, this budget targets wealthy families. The Playa Flamingo Apartments are more suitable for normal families and couples; the rate is from only 239 pounds for 7 nights. There is something to keep the whole family entertained, such as games and quizzes and talent shows for children.
4.Advertising and Promotions
In order to launch more holiday packages into the tourism market, advertising is a good tool to create the image and attracts the attention of more people. “Advertising is an economic investment for any leisure, tour or travel organization, whether it is in the public, private or not-for-profit sector. Effective advertising with a well-planned communications strategy cannot guarantee success, but it certainly increases its chances.” (Morgan & Pritchard, 2000, p.5) “Advertising has been exhaustively defined and it is usually taken to mean either mass communication via newspapers, magazines, radio, television, billboards, the Internet and other media or direct-to-consumer communication via direct mail.” (Morgan & Pritchard, 2000, p.9)
Although the company focus is on advertising, it is also important to know that other promotional objectives are achieved by a variety of activities, such as the use of sales promotions salespeople. Sales promotions can often link to advertising to motivate customers to action or to buy the product. For example, the company can give discounts to the first 1000 customers who book a holiday, people who book a holiday 3 mouths in advance, or who book online. For sales people, such as distributors (travel agencies), the company can encourage them to sell more package holidays by giving them a bonus and more brochures. The companys marketing staff can meet the staff of the travel agency for conferences.
5.Trade Launch activity
Before the “BCFTCS” holiday launch into the market, the writer suggests that the operator could give something to agencies to assist the image. For instances, the operator could possibly give some small stuffs as gifts to agency staffs, tea cups can be good stuff if they have got pictures or few words where the destination being promoted. Every time when staff sell holidays, whenever the cups are used by themselves or customers, it is likely to mention them to recommend the “ BCFTCS” holiday to clients. Also the operator could provide free pens for agency with words of “BCFTCS HOLIDAY” on it; they can be used as complementary pens for customers, which may cause peoples attention.
6.Conclusion
Finally, to sum up, the overall capacity will be steady as 500,000 and destinations are selected as Lazanrote in Spain. Segment of the market to be targeted are the families and couples; two UK departure airports are London Gatwick Airport and Manchester Airport; accommodation type is hotel and apartments. At the end, it has explained advertising and promotional campaingn based on the target market.
