Turkish Coffee土耳其咖啡

Turkish people have been drinking coffee for a long time. In fact， they havebeen drinking it since the 1500’s.

Today， they are well-known for their own kind of coffee. In many coffeeshops or restaurants， you can order a Turkish coffee just as you can order a cupof other kinds of coffee.

People use coffee grounds1 to make Turkish coffee. The coffee grounds arelike small pieces of powder2. Sugar3 and other spices4 are put into thesegrounds， and then it is all put in a small pot of cold water. The pot is put on afire. Just as the coffee begins boiling5， it is taken off the fire and poured6 intocups， grounds and all！ When well made， there will be lots of small bubbles7 atthe top， while most of the coffee grounds will be at the bottom8 of the cup.

In the past， it was the most important thing for Turkish women to know howto make coffee well.

Whenever people tasted coffee in important situations9， everyone watchedhow it was made. If it was not made well， the hostess would lose face. So youngwomen learned how to make good coffee before they got married10. Some menmay marry the women who make the coffee they like best.

Even today， a young woman may be asked to make coffee for her boyfriend’sfamily before getting married. What if she doesn’t want to marry him？ Noproblem！ Just don’t put any sugar into the coffee or break the cup.
