The Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University achieved a groundbreaking milestone in eye surgery, completing the world’s first remote, micron-level surgery on rabbits using their 5G robot. On June 23, 2023,the surgery took place in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, with the team operating the robot from Hainan Eye Hospital at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center in Haikou, Hainan Province.

Led by Professor Lin Haotian, the trial resulted in all 12 rabbits remaining in stable condition after a month of observation. This achievement marks a significant step in advancing remote medicine in China and advanced the country’s medical devices and equipment to world-leading levels, contributing to national medical standards.

He stated, “If everything goes smoothly, 5G remote micron eye surgery will be available to humans within half a year.” This builds upon their previous surgeries on mice, pigs, and other animals, confirming the 5G robot’s stability and accuracy.

Huang’s team collaborates with Professor Lin to develop 5G robots and related technologies for surgeries of this nature. They aim to speed up the implementation and promotion of 5G surgical robots, combine digital telemedicine, and bring new ideas of surgical robot technology as well as new digital therapy medical systems.
