Business of Imported Southeast Asian Fruits Benefiting from Cold Chain Development

As Chinas largest distributor of Southeast Asian fruits, Chongqing Hongjiu Fruit Co., Ltd. (“Hongjiu Fruit”) has benefited greatly from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with in-depth participation. Deng Haoji, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of Hongjiu Fruit, gave an interview with our reporter, talking about how his company has grown into a leading fruit distributor in China by riding on the “fast train” of the BRI as China is seeking extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits with countries along the route.

Better Business Environment and More Business Opportunities

Chinas fresh fruit industry is in a fast-growing period. Thai durian, mangosteen longan, Vietnamese durian, and dragon fruit have been listed as Hongjiu Fruits major import items. “Over the 10 years, under the BRI framework, we have witnessed an ever-improving business environment and more regulated international logistics and customs clearance procedures. Now, we have greatly improved the efficiency of fruit sorting and processing and ensured fruit quality by establishing a close cooperation mechanism with global strategic partners and using cutting-edge production processes, up-to-date equipment, and standardized technical specifications. We have also seen income increase of overseas fruit growers,” said Deng Haoji.

The launch of the BRI has enhanced the connectivity level of Asia and made it more globalized, thus rejuvenating the private economy and allowing broader channels of cooperation for small- and middle-sized enterprises, said Deng Haoji. Currently, local governments in countries along the route attach greater importance to prospective Chinese partners.

China-Lao PDR-Thailand Cold-Chain Freight Train Pioneering “End-to-End” Efficient Distribution

This June, the first train of the dedicated express for “Hongjiu Taihaochi” durian opened, shipping 28 containers of “Hongjiu Taihaochi” durian to Chongqing via the China-Laos Railway within only 88 hours. The regular operation of the express has enhanced the efficiency of transporting fruits from Southeast Asia.

“The durian express of the China-Laos Railway has dramatically cut the time it takes us to transport durians to China. Previously, we mainly relied on maritime and highway freight, and it took about 10 days for us to transport goods to border ports by maritime transport and then to Chengdu and Chongqing by highway. The longer the time of transportation is, the greater the loss is. While road transportation is efficient, it is expensive and entails serious spoilage. After the opening of the cold-chain express, it takes only four days to transport durians from Thailand to the Chengdu and Chongqing region, with cold chain and the same container throughout the process. That allows real-time monitoring of the fruits on the way, reduces losses, and guarantees quality, thus better meeting the market demand. The opening of the cold-chain express has benefited importers that ship fruits from Southeast Asian countries, said Deng Haoji.

Hongjiu Fruit has established an overseas base that handles the local purchasing, processing, sorting, and packaging of fruits. Then, the fruits are transported by special ships or trains to major domestic sorting centers, where they are turned into customized products, and then delivered to sales terminals directly, realizing “end-to-end” highly efficient distribution and delivery. Data showed that Hongjiu Fruit sold more than 25 million durians in 2022 and imported about 13% of the durians granted by Chinese Customs from Thailand.

Digital Supply Chain Boosting the Shared Development of Industries at Home and Abroad

The reporter learned that Hongjiu Fruit has been certified as a top-grade Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) by Chinese Customs, allowing the company to enjoy facilitation measures such as a streamlined customs clearance process, a lower inspection rate, and priority in business handling, further enhancing the efficiency of logistics and customs clearance. Besides, Hongjiu Fruit has pioneered the industry by building an “end-to-end” digital supply chain, enabling temperature visualization throughout the whole chain “from orchards to shelves”, allowing more premium fresh fruits of Southeast Asia to reach more households via the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, and unleashing the tremendous potential for in-depth bilateral cooperation along the Belt and Road.

“Fruits of high quality and good taste can meet peoples aspirations for a better life. Going forward, we will ‘send out well-selected quality homemade fruits via the existing logistics network to boost Chinas farm product industry and rural revitalization, allowing consumers in countries along the route to taste Chinese Ugly Orange and kiwi fruits.” “We will continue to call for the co-building of the ecosystem and engage more industry partners in the business to realize extensive international cooperation. Considering Chinas inclusiveness and sincerity in opening up, we will see a promising future of the BRI,” said Deng Haoji.
