According to a study, taking a bottle of water into the exam room could help students do better in their exam. The study found that those who brought drinks, especially water with them into the exam room performed at least 10 percent better than those who did not.

Psychologists (心理學家) said it was unclear why drinking water would improve students performance but said that enough water could have a helpful influence on the brain. They studied hundreds of students in middle schools and universities. Their study, introduced at the British Psychological Society Conference in London, showed that those who brought drinks with them did ten percent better on average in exams.

For students in middle schools, grades could be improved by 12 percent while there was less influence on those in universities. Mark Gardner of Westminster University, one of the researchers, said,“It shows that the effect is larger for younger students. We think it could be important. Those students could be more worried and the water is having an active effect on exam pressure.”“Or it could be that the younger students might not eat as healthily as university students and possibly stayed up late the night before,so they might need to drink more water to stop their body from being dehydrated(脱水的).”

Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than“Im sorry”.This phrase has become such a common response that it has taken on a lot of meanings.

Saying “Sorry”means to apologize. This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.

But in Britain,it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression.Imagine this:a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone.A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man.She sees him,but she cant get out of the way in time. The man bumps(碰撞) into the woman.Who should say sorry?Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasnt looking where he was going.Yet in Britain,it is common for both to apologize.

It is known that British people, like most people,do not enjoy conflict(冲突).So to quickly calm the situation,British people will apologize to each other.

Other times it may sound funny to hear“sorry”.Some of my friends say it at restaurants,as they ask the waiter:“Sorry, but can I order another drink?”It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesnt always mean exactly what you think.

()29. What does the phrase“takes on”mean in the story?

While humans depend on technology to travel, some animals have something far more advanced (先进的). Researchers, mainly from Oregon State University,US,found that Chinook salmon (鮭鱼) have a “built?in GPS” of the Earths magnetic field (磁场). It acts like a map inside their brain. This means they are able to direct themselves in the ocean as soon as they are born.

Scientists placed some baby salmon in a big swimming pool. To create a magnetic field that is similar to the Earths, they put magnetic coils (线圈) around the pool. When the direction of the coils was changed, the salmon began to change their own direction. They started to face in the direction of their ocean feeding area. This is a safe place in the ocean where salmon can find food to eat. When the scientists changed the coils to the opposite side, the salmon also turned in the opposite direction. Just by using their “built?in GPS”,the salmon were able to figure out the direction of their feeding area.

How did Chinook salmon get their “built?in GPS”? The scientists believe that their navigation (导航) skills came through evolution (进化). The fish that were able to reach the feeding area lived longer. Then they could pass on their navigation skills to their babies. So if youre ever lost and in need of some help, maybe you should ask a salmon to point you in the right direction!

()33. According to Paragraph 2,we know that Chinook salmon ________.

A. prefer to stay in their safe places

B. have their own built?in magnetic field

C. get their sense of direction by training hard

D. can react to changes in the Earths magnetic field

()34. Why did Chinook salmon develop their navigation skills?

A. To speed up their evolution.
