Myra Rodriguess hands are how she sees theworld.“My hands are my eyes. I rely on touch to doeverything, really.”Diagnosed (诊断) with infantglaucoma at the age of three, Rodrigues has beenalmost completely blind since she was a youngchild.

Now 79, Rodrigues navigates her life, livingalone in her Toronto home, with little vision. But Rodriguess trust in her touch ability ledher to the sport of rock climbing. The first climb at Metcalfe Rock, outside of Collingwood,Ontario, was an experience Rodrigues will never forget.

“I was so excited because I found that climbing can be very tactile (有觸觉的),”shesays.“Youre feeling the rock with your hands, with your fingers. Youre finding those littlecracks where you can put your fingers in to hold on.”

Rock climbing, for Rodrigues, opens up another way to experience nature. Herhighly developed sense of touch, which she has strengthened over a lifetime of readingBraille (盲文) and navigating day?to?day life, helps her be in nature in a new way.

Rodrigues is so mad about climbing, and she decided to start a club to encourage people with vision loss to take up the sport. In 2019, she started CCB Rocks. Their missionis to introduce members to climbing, regardless of experience or fitness levels. The club isindoor climbs and starts to plan outdoor climbs.

“Rock climbing has really meant a lot to me,”Rodrigues says. Not only has it givenher a new opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, but also its helped build confidence andcreate a community. Many people like her have never tried it. And its a thrill just to have agroup there to have a try together. It might take them two or three times before they get upoff the floor. And some of them reach the top. The success and enthusiasm of the peoplewho have joined CCB Rocks are a great joy to Rodrigues.
