Significant growth has been achieved in the R&D investment, the pool of scientific and technological professionals, the international patent applications, and the number of high-tech enterprises in China. Over the past 10 years, the innovation in science and technology in China has made solid progress, and China’s status and role in global innovation landscape have changed.

According to thereleased by the World Intellectual Property Organization, China has risen from the 34place in 2012 to the 12in 2021, moving up 22 spots in 10 years.It marks that China is both an important participant in international cutting-edge innovation and an important contributor working with international community to address global issues.

Since the 18CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as its core has made innovation the primary driving force for development, and put forward top-level design for sci-tech innovation with big-picture thinking for the whole party and the whole nation. Under the strategic direction of “Four Orientations”, major measures for reform have been planned, formulated and promoted so as to push forward holistic and structural improvement for nation’s science and technology development standing at new height.

Over the past 10 years, the scientists and sci-tech professionals target the global sci-tech frontiers, serve the economic development, strive to fulfill the significant needs of the country, benefit people’s lives and health, respond to national calls for building China into a major country in science and technology, and consistently broaden and deepen their sci-tech research areas.

Targeting the global sci-tech frontiers, scientists focus on research goal while freely exploring into new frontiers; serve the economic development and provide technological support for China’s manufacturer toward the medium and high-level; strive to fulfill the significant needs of the country, intensify efforts to make major breakthroughs in core technologies for key fields, shore up weak links and reinforce capacity in focal areas; benefit people’s lives and health and carry out emergency scientific research to provide strong support for COVID-19 prevention and control. Great effects are made to develop innovative drugs, homegrown high-end medical devices, and advanced diagnosis and therapeutics technology to ensure that the fruits of high-quality innovation benefit all people.
