1Every August or September,for many students,the countdown to going to college has begun.During that time,we will be in charge of our health,safety and academics—not to mention being a good roommate.Now is the time to ask the hard questions:Do we know how to do our laundry?Can we schedule our own dentist appointments?

2To be honest,in her decade as a freshman dean at a university,Julie Lythcott-Haims saw many first-year students come to college with a lot of academic knowledge but big gaps in their life skills.
