I.阅读理解

As an adult,I realized that I had no skills,so I went to a trade school.I entered a cabinetmaking (家具制造)program.I didn't think I would be good at building furniture.I'm not handy.Nobody in my family is.

I had great teachers, but making furniture is hard. There are so many steps and something can go wrong at each one.I couldn't even get organized. My toolbox always looked like a hurricane had gone through it.

I didn't fully know what I was devoting myself to at the beginning, but I kept going to class.I tried to wrap my brain around the math. The projects forced me to solve new kinds of problems. My brain started to build new connections.Working in this new physical manner and giving it 100 percent of my effort had huge benefits for my mental health.I got over the fear of embarrassment and asked for help at every opportunity.

I spent that year truly learning.True learning is a humbling(令人谦卑的)experience, especially for those of us who are learning a new set of skills.I could understand exactly what was wrong with the furniture I made, but I couldn't fix my mistakes. And yet,I kept trying, only to fail and fail again until I learned to learn from failure.

You're going to be bad at anything when you start out,but I was pretty bad right to the end.Even so,I finished the program—with honors! My grades were helped by my good written work.Having to constantly push beyond my comfort zone has made me a better-rounded person.Maybe most importantly, the trade school gave me a more realistic idea of my strengths and limitations.I'm stronger than I thought!

Ⅱ.补全信息

Think like this when you feel stressed

It's a sweet opportunity. If you look on pressure as a threat, you are sure to be negatively impacted by its occurrence. 1 They look on it as a great chance. They will cherish(珍惜)the pressure moment and approach it with confidence and enthusiasm.

I'll get another chance.Under pressure,we often lose hope.We tend to distort(扭曲)the reality of the situation. One of the most common phrases is “chance of a lifetime”,in which we tell ourselves,“I will never get an opportunity like this again,so I can't miss it.” 2

I'll do my best. This is what people who do their best under pressure tell themselves when they are going into a pressure moment. 3 Because it prevents them from wasting valuable energy worrying over things they can't influence and promotes confidence at the same time.Focusing on doing your best keeps you in the moment and guides your behavior toward success.

4 People who perform their best under pressure will reduce the significance of the upcoming pressure moment,so they feel less stressed.Whether it's a sales call or an interview for their dream jobs, they are like winning athletes, and when asked how to handle the pressure of the big game, they responded,“It's just another game.”

I can control how I respond.People who do their best in a pressure moment focus on what they can control. 5 If you have an upcoming interview, don't worry about the other applicants. You can't control them.Practice how you will handle an unexpected problem.

A.It's no big deal.

B.It stops you paying attention to anxiety.

C.Instead, take care of your own business.

D.Remembering past success increases your confidence.

E.In fact,we have many chances to succeed in our lifetime.

F.But people who do their best in a pressure moment are different.

G.Focusing on doing their best quickly decreases pressure in the moment.

Ⅳ.读后续写

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

I'm an English self-learner,but English is not my first language.Today I am an English teacher.I would like to say that failures are not disastrous.Have faith, keep moving on,and never give up hope, and you will see your hard work pay off.

I was a slow learner when I was little. Before five,I couldn't even speak in full sentences.Unlike most other children,I seldom interacted with others;I neither cried nor threw tantrums. My extreme quietness made my parents wonder if I was mentally slow, but they were not sure.Actually,I have to confess that my memories of my early childhood are quite unclear.

My learning problems were the result of my mother taking some medicine when she became pregnant with me.Although I was born without any physical defects (缺陷),the medicine did affect my early intellectual development. When I was in elementary school,I learned very slowly and was as quiet as a doll. While my teacher was teaching,my mind often wandered outside the classroom to the playground. As a fifth grader,I finally started interacting with my classmates. That was the first time in my memory that I had had some friends.

After heading at full speed for my junior high education,my learning situation got stuck in the mud again. In my country, students entering junior high school had to take an IQ test.It was a test for schools to evaluate students'learning abilities so that they could arrange them into different levels of classes based on their IQ test scores.I was placed in the“bottom class”as a result of my below-average IQ scores. Most of my teachers taught us to use easy and slow methods because they considered us incapable of learning much. However,I never wanted to lose faith that I might one day succeed. To prove that when God closes a door,He will definitely open up a big window,a miracle occurred. That's when I discovered a strong passion for English.

Paragraph 1:

At the age of 13,I found myself deeply interested in English.______________________

Paragraph 2:

My story proves everyone has the ability to learn.__________________________________
