Debate competition enriches my experience
12 June
Dear Diary,I'm so happy today. I, along with my three classmates, signed up for a debate competition which was held in my school, Yangzhong Senior School. As a group,we participated in it on behalf of Class 5 to debate whether the children should be mainly responsible for the generation gap between parents and children.
Unfortunately, our opponents were students from Class 1,which is the top class in our school. Of course, they were regarded as the absolute winners. However, we didn't lose our heart. If they were strong, we were determined to be stronger.Knowing it would be a tough battle, we made full preparations for it. We spared enough time to disc uss the strategies. What's more, we were clearly assigned to play different roles in this debate respectively. I was chosen to be the leader, while my three classmates served as my partners. We searched for plenty of arguments and sorted them out accurately to support our standpoint.
Eventually, the tense moment came. Confident and well prepared, we reached the appointed place. We encouraged and supported each other. Though the opponents were fairly strong, our performance gained higher praise. After the heated debate, we won the competition! How excited we were! Words failed me when I was awarded the prize of the best debater. Nothing is impossible as long as you try your best to fight for it! The competition strengthens our thinking ability and develops our speaking skills. It's fortunate for me to enter such a competition.

Debate breaks the mindset
This weekend, the debaters from seven departments gathered in the hall of Nanjing Audit University Jinshen College and participated in a splendid debate competition—Jinshen Cup Competition.Starting in 2015,this competition provided the platform for college students to fully show their communication skills and sharp thinking ability.
As a debate enthusiast, even if I was just an audience, I was still excited. Not only did the war of words inspire me, but also the debates showed me a new angle that I never got before looking back on the world or social problems. Take one of my most impressive arguments for example. In China, is the core cause of doctor-patient problem conceptual or institutional? My first reaction to this argument was that “Oh, of course, it is the matter of the system. ” In my view, the institutional problems directly lead to chaos in the health care market. However, the debaters supporting conceptual matters told us that this problem was due to the traditional culture of China. Opening old scriptures, we could see that how doctors should set up their own professional ethics and if they rejected patients, especially aristocrats, they would face some kind of punishment. But those books didn't tell us how to be a good patient. This led some people to hold a conception that the patient was the god of a doctor, and if the god unfortunately passed away, the doctor was the killer.
If I hadn't listened to the debate, I would have not analyzed the causes of this problem from the perspective of traditional culture. So, you see, the argument itself is not right or wrong, but it shows us how to see right and wrong in a rational way. Just as a famous debater said, “We even hope that debate will be a way of changing society, free from ignorance and numbness, free from fear and want, free and equal.” So the significance of debate is not only to win or lose, but to allow us to see the beauty and shortcomings of human civilization at the same time.

Last Wednesday, an English speech contest was held in our school in order to show the talents of some students who were chosen to represent their classes in Senior 2. The contest was tight in the beginning, then becoming heated and exciting.
I was honored to have an opportunity to watch the speech contest, admiring the elegance of our schoolmates. The topic of the speech is“the unforgettable moment”. Before the contest, these 24 contestants had well prepared their original speeches, designed their elegant slides(幻灯片) and practiced speaking over and over under the guidance of their English teachers, trying to show their best side to all the audience.
The whole process of the speech contest was exciting. Some of the contestants delivered emotional speeches, some expressed themselves with great passion, some started with poetic lines, and some cited powerful sentences. All of them won warm applause from both teachers and students. Later, English dubbing performances(配音表演) and English song performances by students at intervals and the end of the contest, showed their unique talent, lightening the tense atmosphere. After the fierce competition, every contestant was scored by senior teachers.
Those who did not won the prize were also pleased, because they won everyone's appreciation.
After watching this English speech contest,I found that learning English is not only about learning knowledge from textbooks, but also learning to speak it out. Besides, English is not as cold as the words in the textbook, but as lively as the speeches, performances and songs showed in this contest. This English speech contest, as its theme goes, is really an unforgettable experience in my life of learning English.
